In the weeks following the apartment fire, your temporary stay at Xavier's mansion gradually became something more familiar. The Danger Room reconstruction of that night revealed that the unexplained energy awakened within you was separate from your ordinary mutation.

Not only were you capable of manifesting defense under pressure, more strangely, you were able to interact with another Mutant's abilities when Jean Grey experienced an unexpected surge in her telekinesis. No one yet understood what the phenomenon was, but continued training gave you enough familiarity with both the mansion, its residents, and that the possibility of accompanying them beyond its grounds no longer seemed impossible.

That opportunity came on September 12th, when Cerebro detected a newly exposed Mutant at the center of a collapsing Manhattan construction site. Reports identified him as Elias Mercer, a worker whose hidden vibrational abilities had surfaced during an accident that endangered his coworkers; some witnesses claimed his powers had caused the disaster, while others insisted he had used them to save lives.

With Mercer frightened, increasingly unstable, and emergency crews unable to safely approach the structure, Scott authorized you to accompany the others on your first real field deployment—wearing the team's protective uniform without yet carrying the title that came with it.
