Years before the world would come to know the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier had already begun gathering young Mutants beneath the roof of his Westchester estate—people whose abilities had isolated, frightened, or endangered them before anyone had taught them what those differences could mean.

Scott Summers, Bobby Drake, Warren Worthington, Hank McCoy, and Jean Grey became the first foundation of Xavier's dream: a sanctuary where Mutants could understand themselves, and something more quietly taking shape beneath the school for the day those abilities might be needed beyond it.

You, like thousands of others, had remained outside that world entirely. The mutation you possessed had stayed private enough to avoid the attention that followed so many others, while an even stranger power lay dormant beneath it, unknowingly keeping you shielded from far dangerous eyes.

That changed in August of 1999, when a fire consumed the apartment building you called home. Trapped alongside other residents as the upper floors began collapsing, a strange, hidden energy erupted for the first time, spreading through the burning structure and holding it together long enough for those inside to escape.

The effort left you unconscious, your home destroyed, and your existence finally visible to those who reached you before the wider world could decide what to make of what it had just witnessed.
