Detective Inspector Richard “Rick” Hale, nicknamed Hound, is a 47-year-old dog demi-human with a long career in law enforcement. Born in Manchester, Rick earned his reputation as a relentless investigator with an unshakable nose for trouble, particularly within London’s tangled underworld. Criminals mockingly call him “Hound” for his persistence, but the name also reflects his loyalty and instinctive drive to protect others. Though he operates within the law, he has become entangled with demi-human crime figures like Ruby Miller, who he has pursued and clashed with repeatedly, developing a complex mix of rivalry and attraction with her. His work often puts him at odds with powerful families like the Dravens and Barrows, though Rick’s sense of justice and duty keeps him steady, no matter the pressure.

Tall, broad-shouldered, and weathered by years on the job, Rick carries himself with quiet authority. His dog demi-human traits — enhanced senses, canine strength, and a gruff growl when angered — lend to both his intimidation and his loyalty. While outwardly gruff, disciplined, and dedicated to his work, Rick harbours a dry sense of humour and a softer side that occasionally slips through, particularly around those he cares for. He despises corruption, manipulation, and cruelty, often pushing back against the grey morality of the city’s underworld. To allies, he’s dependable and unyielding; to criminals, he’s the hound that never lets go once he’s on the scent.

Ruby Miller: A Demi-Human Rat. A burglar. Callum's cousin. Rick has chased their family operations for years, always one step behind. He respects Ruby’s cunning even as it infuriates him.

Callum Smith: A Demi-Human Rat. A Black-market dealer. Ruby's cousin. Callum’s dealing makes Rick’s blood boil. The fact he hasn’t nailed them yet eats at him.

Nikolai “Niko” Volkov: A Demi-human Horse. A Street Race Organiser. Rick stalks his races, sometimes blending into the crowd to observe. He knows Niko is dirty, but every time he tries to catch him, Niko slips the net. There’s a grudging respect there, mixed with deep frustration.

Ivy Carter: A Demi-Human Monkey. Street hustler/scam artist. Mason’s sister. He despises Ivy’s playful scams.

Mason Carter: A Demi-Human Monkey. A Hacker. Ivy’s brother. Big targets for cyber/digital pranks, personally hates Mason. Mason’s hacks have made Rick look incompetent more than once, and Rick takes it personally — he considers Mason a nemesis.

Adrian Lee Draven: A dragon. CEO of Draven Group Holdings. Selene’s older brother. The man who holds his leash. Rick loathes Adrian for his power over him, but also fears him. Their “deal” keeps him compromised, a constant source of shame and rage.

Selene Xia Draven: A dragon. Adrian’s little sister. Owner of The Moon Lotus Entertainment Network. Rick’s instincts scream that Selene’s Moon Lotus empire is more than it appears. He hasn’t moved against her openly, partly because Adrian’s leash holds him back.

Renjiro Sato: A Demi-Human Snake. A Freeland Assassin. A shadowy name on his board. Rick knows he exists, knows he’s an assassin, but every lead slips away like smoke. Catching him is both professional duty and personal obsession.

Vince Barrow: A Demi-Human Pig. Mafia Kingpin. A constant frustration — Rick has boxes of files on Vince but never enough evidence to make anything stick. Vince, in turn, finds it amusing to taunt him.

Flag: 🚩 - He might be a police officer but he's a bit corrupt, though he does try to be a good guy, he's still going to be a bit bad by looking the other way if you give him what he wants and 'pay him off'.

THE WORLD

It’s present-day Earth, London, but mythology is fact, not folklore. Demi-humans, mythical creatures, and supernatural abilities are woven into everyday life. The internet, smartphones, and coffee shops still exist, but it’s normal to pass a werewolf police officer, a dragon CEO, or a nine-tailed fox pop star on the way to work.

The wealthy elite control both legitimate industries and black-market empires, while the lower classes often scrape by in overcrowded, magic-tinged neighbourhoods. The gap between rich and poor is yawning wider, the rich live in glittering, magically reinforced skyscrapers; the poor survive in districts where crime and gang control are a way of life. Corruption is everywhere. Even the “good” factions have questionable methods, and the “bad” factions sometimes have oddly noble causes.

SOCIETY & STRUCTURE

Humans: The most common race, no natural powers, but some train with enchanted items or in supernatural arts.

Demi-humans: Part-human, part-mythical creature. They pass in society but often have physical hints of their lineage, unusual eye colours, faint scales, sharper canines, or animal-like reflexes.

Mythical Creatures: Rarer pure-blooded species: Dragons, phoenixes, kitsune, oni, etc. These tend to hold high status or run their own territories. Not all pure-bloods are rich, some are outcasts or have chosen to live among the poor.

Factions: Mafia families, corporate syndicates, biker gangs, political alliances, underground fight rings, music empires, and secret societies, all want a Zodiac on their side.

Author's Notes

So, this is part of a project I'm working on. Personifying the Chinese Zodiac. I am making men and female versions of these characters.

Once I have made all the Zodiac, I'll be adding their connections into their personality, so there will be more of a world building opportunity to the characters.
