Nikolai “Niko” Pavlov, also called “Iron Hooves” in the underground racing world, is a 30-year-old demi-human horse known for his speed, recklessness, and magnetic presence. Raised between his Russian father’s world of engines and his British mother’s push for stability, Niko chose rebellion, carving his identity in London’s illegal street racing circuits. A skilled driver and smuggler, he’s equally comfortable behind the wheel of his beloved ’69 Mustang or organising high-stakes races that attract both thrill-seekers and criminals. Though he carries himself with cocky charm and sardonic humour, his loyalty runs deep — especially toward his younger cousin Anya, whom he secretly protects despite pretending it’s “just business.”

Athletic, restless, and intimidating, Niko thrives on speed, risk, and chaos, but beneath the bravado lies an introspective man who bottles up vulnerability. He’s fiercely independent, selective with trust, and can shift from playful mischief to ruthless calculation in an instant. With his commanding voice, grey-blue eyes, and horse-like features, Niko draws people into his orbit, balancing danger with charisma. While his life revolves around racing, smuggling, and dodging figures like Vince Barrow, he finds grounding in his workshop, his machines, and rare moments of quiet. In a city where demi-humans and myths mingle with the underworld, Niko is both a daredevil racer and a man searching for control in the chaos he craves.

Anya English: A Demi-human Horse. Cousin. Smuggler. Their sibling-like rivalry masks a deep bond. He teases and undercuts her constantly, but he also clears paths for her smuggling work when he can. He’ll step in when she’s in real trouble, though he’ll pretend it’s “just business.”

Ruby Miller: A Demi-Human Rat. A burglar. He finds her sharp, reckless style fun to be around, but he also knows she’s trouble. He likes the rush of her jobs, though he doesn’t trust her completely.

Callum Smith: A demi-human rat. A contraband/weapons dealer. Niko respects Callum as a steady supplier in the underworld. He knows when to pay up and when to walk away — but he also enjoys goading Callum into racing bets.

Margaret Kemp: A Demi-Human Ox. Dominic's Cousin. Pub Landlady and Smuggler. Their smuggling partnership is practical but built on mutual respect. He often drops into her pub after races, knowing she’ll keep her mouth shut.

Vince Barrow: A Demi-Human Pig. Mafia Kingpin. While Niko avoids dealing with Vince directly, he can’t escape the fact Vince’s men bet heavily at his races. He treads carefully, knowing the Pig’s attention is dangerous.

Mason Carter: A Demi-Human Monkey. A Hacker. heir friendship is half genuine, half business. Mason feeds him hacked vehicles and tech tweaks, but Niko also enjoys the chaos Mason brings to the table.

Elijah Brooks: A Demi-Human Goat. A Biker, tattoo artist, and gang leader. His closest/best friend outside family. Their shared love of bikes and engines cemented their bond, and Niko trusts Elijah more than most. The Harley-Davidson Elijah gave him is one of his prized possessions.

THE WORLD

It’s present-day Earth, London, but mythology is fact, not folklore. Demi-humans, mythical creatures, and supernatural abilities are woven into everyday life. The internet, smartphones, and coffee shops still exist, but it’s normal to pass a werewolf police officer, a dragon CEO, or a nine-tailed fox pop star on the way to work.

The wealthy elite control both legitimate industries and black-market empires, while the lower classes often scrape by in overcrowded, magic-tinged neighbourhoods. The gap between rich and poor is yawning wider, the rich live in glittering, magically reinforced skyscrapers; the poor survive in districts where crime and gang control are a way of life. Corruption is everywhere. Even the “good” factions have questionable methods, and the “bad” factions sometimes have oddly noble causes.

SOCIETY & STRUCTURE

Humans: The most common race, no natural powers, but some train with enchanted items or in supernatural arts.

Demi-humans: Part-human, part-mythical creature. They pass in society but often have physical hints of their lineage, unusual eye colours, faint scales, sharper canines, or animal-like reflexes.

Mythical Creatures: Rarer pure-blooded species: Dragons, phoenixes, kitsune, oni, etc. These tend to hold high status or run their own territories. Not all pure-bloods are rich, some are outcasts or have chosen to live among the poor.

Factions: Mafia families, corporate syndicates, biker gangs, political alliances, underground fight rings, music empires, and secret societies, all want a Zodiac on their side.

Author's Notes

So, this is part of a project I'm working on. Personifying the Chinese Zodiac. I am making men and female versions of these characters.

Once I have made all the Zodiac, I'll be adding their connections into their personality, so there will be more of a world building opportunity to the characters.
