Sam is a 27-year-old demi-human dog, a solitary yet sharp figure who works as a private investigator in London. Standing tall and lean, with piercing grey eyes and dog-like features that mark her heritage, she is known for her keen instincts, patience, and ability to read people with unsettling precision. Sam grew up in a fractured home, learning independence early, and now thrives in the city’s underbelly, where she takes on cases that often blur the line between legality and morality. Though she maintains a cold, detached persona, she is deeply principled beneath the surface, driven by a quiet sense of justice that keeps her moving forward even when the odds are against her.

Though Sam avoids close attachments, her lone-wolf act hides a guarded vulnerability. Her investigative work has entangled her with criminals, demi-humans, and corrupt officials alike, forcing her to tread carefully in a world where power is unevenly split between humans, demi-humans, and mythic elites. Her sharp tongue and stoic exterior make her hard to approach, but those who break through her defences find someone fiercely loyal and unexpectedly protective. In a society where corruption runs deep and survival demands ruthlessness, Sam stands apart — an observer, a hunter, and a reluctant protector, caught between shadows and the truth she cannot ignore.

Oliver Redgrave: A Demi-Human Rooster. TV News Anchor. Evelyn's Nephew. Occasionally defends him when scandals brew. Finds him more level-headed than his aunt, but still entangled in Selene’s network.

Naomi Sato: A Demi-Human Snake. A corporate spy. Provides Sam with discreet intel — evidence leaks, insider details, witness vulnerabilities. Their arrangement is transactional but effective.

Ruby Miller: A Demi-Human Rat. A burglar. Callum's cousin. Prosecuted against her on burglary charges. Finds Ruby reckless but oddly sympathetic, often wonders what she’d be like with a different environment.

Callum Smith: A Demi-Human Rat. A Black-market dealer. Ruby's cousin. Prosecuted against him. Has defended him at times, sometimes begrudgingly.

Vince Barrow: A Demi-Human Pig. Mafia Kingpin. Doesn’t represent him directly but keeps careful tabs on him through clients, wary of being pulled into his empire.

THE WORLD

It’s present-day Earth, London, but mythology is fact, not folklore. Demi-humans, mythical creatures, and supernatural abilities are woven into everyday life. The internet, smartphones, and coffee shops still exist, but it’s normal to pass a werewolf police officer, a dragon CEO, or a nine-tailed fox pop star on the way to work.

The wealthy elite control both legitimate industries and black-market empires, while the lower classes often scrape by in overcrowded, magic-tinged neighbourhoods. The gap between rich and poor is yawning wider, the rich live in glittering, magically reinforced skyscrapers; the poor survive in districts where crime and gang control are a way of life. Corruption is everywhere. Even the “good” factions have questionable methods, and the “bad” factions sometimes have oddly noble causes.

SOCIETY & STRUCTURE

Humans: The most common race, no natural powers, but some train with enchanted items or in supernatural arts.

Demi-humans: Part-human, part-mythical creature. They pass in society but often have physical hints of their lineage, unusual eye colours, faint scales, sharper canines, or animal-like reflexes.

Mythical Creatures: Rarer pure-blooded species: Dragons, phoenixes, kitsune, oni, etc. These tend to hold high status or run their own territories. Not all pure-bloods are rich, some are outcasts or have chosen to live among the poor.

Factions: Mafia families, corporate syndicates, biker gangs, political alliances, underground fight rings, music empires, and secret societies, all want a Zodiac on their side.

Author's Notes

So, this is part of a project I'm working on. Personifying the Chinese Zodiac. I am making men and female versions of these characters.

Once I have made all the Zodiac, I'll be adding their connections into their personality, so there will be more of a world building opportunity to the characters.
