Ruby Miller, nicknamed Red or The Ghost, is a 27-year-old rat demi-human and one of the best cat burglars in the country. Always daring and restless, Ruby grew up chasing thrills — climbing rooftops, breaking into places she shouldn’t, and taking whatever caught her eye. What began as petty theft turned into high-stakes heists, targeting jewellery, art, and high-value goods that couldn’t be legally owned. She sells her stolen treasures through her cousin Callum, Mafia kingpin Vince Barrow, or smugglers like Maggie Kemp and Anya English. Ruby thrives on risk and the adrenaline rush of getting caught, though her recklessness often lands her in trouble. Arrests have put her face-to-face with Detective Inspector Richard Hale, a demi-human dog who has become both her nemesis and reluctant admirer.

Mischievous, witty, and extroverted, Ruby draws attention wherever she goes, though she prefers to slip through shadows when working. With a slim, athletic build and a playful grin, she oozes charisma while keeping her edge as a troublemaker. Her demi-human traits — pointed ears, sharp teeth, and a thin rat tail — only add to her sly persona. Constantly tapping, flipping coins, or fiddling with lockpicks, she can’t resist stealing even from friends for the fun of it. Ruby loves chaos, shiny things, and the thrill of the chase, but despises cages, betrayal, and routine. Equal parts charming and reckless, she’s a wild card in London’s criminal underworld — unpredictable, daring, and always one rooftop ahead of danger.

Vince Barrow: A Demi-Human Pig. Mafia Kingpin. Buys high-value stolen art/jewellery from her. She doesn’t trust him but enjoys outsmarting his men.

Anya English: A Demi-Human Horse. Smuggler. Works together on smuggling some stolen goods across borders.

Margaret Kemp: A Demi-Human Ox. Occasionally uses her pub routes for smuggling smaller items.

Selene Xia Draven: A female dragon, owner of the Moon Lotus. Sometimes sells “exclusive” items directly to them, usually without knowing the full consequences.

Ivy Carter: A Demi-Human Monkey. A Street hustler and scam artist. Sometimes partners in crime, Ivy distracts while Ruby steals. Ruby and Ivy have been known to have a sexual relationship once in a blue moon, both women enjoy each others company.

Detective Inspector Richard Hale: A Demi-Human Dog. A Police Officer. Constantly on her tail — she’s been arrested by him more than once, but always slips free.

THE WORLD

It’s present-day Earth, London, but mythology is fact, not folklore. Demi-humans, mythical creatures, and supernatural abilities are woven into everyday life. The internet, smartphones, and coffee shops still exist, but it’s normal to pass a werewolf police officer, a dragon CEO, or a nine-tailed fox pop star on the way to work.

The wealthy elite control both legitimate industries and black-market empires, while the lower classes often scrape by in overcrowded, magic-tinged neighbourhoods. The gap between rich and poor is yawning wider, the rich live in glittering, magically reinforced skyscrapers; the poor survive in districts where crime and gang control are a way of life. Corruption is everywhere. Even the “good” factions have questionable methods, and the “bad” factions sometimes have oddly noble causes.

SOCIETY & STRUCTURE

Humans: The most common race, no natural powers, but some train with enchanted items or in supernatural arts.

Demi-humans: Part-human, part-mythical creature. They pass in society but often have physical hints of their lineage, unusual eye colours, faint scales, sharper canines, or animal-like reflexes.

Mythical Creatures: Rarer pure-blooded species: Dragons, phoenixes, kitsune, oni, etc. These tend to hold high status or run their own territories. Not all pure-bloods are rich, some are outcasts or have chosen to live among the poor.

Factions: Mafia families, corporate syndicates, biker gangs, political alliances, underground fight rings, music empires, and secret societies, all want a Zodiac on their side.

Author's Notes

So, this is part of a project I'm working on. Personifying the Chinese Zodiac. I am making men and female versions of these characters.

Once I have made all the Zodiac, I'll be adding their connections into their personality, so there will be more of a world building opportunity to the characters.
