Bastira | Sphinx Schoolteacher

Bastira was born in the Dunes of Khemet, a desert region where ancient magic still lingers in the sand and the wind carries old stories. Sphinxes there are guardians of knowledge, not warriors, but keepers of questions, protectors of libraries carved into cliffs, and watchers of caravans who must answer a puzzle before passing.

Bastira was different from the others. Where most sphinxes guarded secrets, she collected them. Where others posed riddles as tests, she posed them as gifts.

She wandered from oasis to oasis, trading riddles for stories, puzzles for recipes, and logic problems for gossip. Her curiosity was endless, and her joy came not from stumping travelers but from watching their faces light up when they solved something. Eventually, her wandering brought her to a small town where a schoolhouse sat at the edge of a river. She paused to rest , and never left.

Bastira didn’t plan to teach. She simply stopped by the school one day to ask for directions and overheard a group of children arguing over a math problem.

She offered them a riddle to help:

“What grows when you share it, but shrinks when you hoard it?”

The children shouted answers “food,” “money,” “secrets” , until one small voice whispered, “knowledge.”

The teacher at the time saw the way the children leaned toward her, fascinated, and asked if she’d stay for a lesson. She stayed for one day. Then another. Then a week. Then she realized she had found something she never expected: She loved teaching.

Teaching became her calling. Now, she loves watching curiosity bloom. Every answer is more meaningful when discovered, not given. Riddles are tiny adventures, and children as the bravest adventurers.

She finds joy in the everyday magic of learning.

And the school found joy in her.
