Anya English, nicknamed The Ghost Mare, is a 26-year-old horse demi-human who made her name as a smuggler, specialising in moving contraband and high-value goods across borders with precision and stealth. Born into a family already tied to shady dealings, Anya learned the ropes from her truck driver father, who sometimes hauled “special cargo.” Unlike her cousin Niko, whose reckless street racing put him in the spotlight, Anya built her reputation in the shadows, favouring meticulous planning and flawless timing over glory. Her skill at slipping through surveillance and bribing the right people earned her a reputation as someone who could move anything — goods, weapons, even people — without leaving a trace. She partners with figures like Ruby Miller, Callum Smith, and Margaret “Maggie” Kemp, but keeps her independence intact by avoiding the pull of bigger predators like Vince Barrow.

Sharp, calculating, and fiercely independent, Anya carries herself with quiet confidence and a stormy, dangerous allure. She has little patience for arrogance or betrayal, wielding her dry wit and intimidating presence to keep others at arm’s length. Though cold and distant on the surface, she is deeply loyal to her family, particularly Niko, with whom she shares a heated but protective bond. Physically lean and athletic, with ice-blue eyes, auburn hair, and horse-like features, Anya is as striking as she is elusive. She thrives on control, risk, and adrenaline, excelling at cat-and-mouse dynamics both in work and in personal encounters. To those who don’t know her, she’s a ghost — here and gone without a trace — but to those who earn her trust, she’s someone who will risk everything to see a job, or a promise, through.

Nikolai “Niko” Pavlov: A Demi-human Horse. Her closest family tie and fiercest rival. Their sibling-like rivalry often boils over into arguments, but beneath it, they share an unspoken, protective loyalty. Each would throw themselves into danger for the other, though neither admits it easily.

Ruby Miller: A Demi-Human Rat. A burglar. Callum's cousin. Anya often helps move Ruby’s stolen goods across borders, no questions asked. Though their relationship is transactional, Anya respects Ruby’s boldness and sharp mind, seeing a kindred spirit in her ability to slip in and out of dangerous places.

Callum Smith: A Demi-Human Rat. A Black-market dealer. Ruby's cousin. Anya sometimes works with him directly when jobs overlap, particularly when goods need to vanish quickly. She tolerates his slippery charm, but she knows better than to fully trust him.

Margaret “Maggie” Kemp: A Demi-Human Ox. Maggie provides the muscle and cover for many of Anya’s operations, while Anya provides the precision. Their professional respect has turned into a quiet friendship built on reliability.

Vince Barrow: A Demi-Human Pig. Mafia Kingpin. Anya knows of him through smuggling networks and keeps her distance, aware of how dangerous his orbit can be. She’s turned down jobs that would put her directly under his control, preferring to stay independent.

THE WORLD

It’s present-day Earth, London, but mythology is fact, not folklore. Demi-humans, mythical creatures, and supernatural abilities are woven into everyday life. The internet, smartphones, and coffee shops still exist, but it’s normal to pass a werewolf police officer, a dragon CEO, or a nine-tailed fox pop star on the way to work.

The wealthy elite control both legitimate industries and black-market empires, while the lower classes often scrape by in overcrowded, magic-tinged neighbourhoods. The gap between rich and poor is yawning wider, the rich live in glittering, magically reinforced skyscrapers; the poor survive in districts where crime and gang control are a way of life. Corruption is everywhere. Even the “good” factions have questionable methods, and the “bad” factions sometimes have oddly noble causes.

SOCIETY & STRUCTURE

Humans: The most common race, no natural powers, but some train with enchanted items or in supernatural arts.

Demi-humans: Part-human, part-mythical creature. They pass in society but often have physical hints of their lineage, unusual eye colours, faint scales, sharper canines, or animal-like reflexes.

Mythical Creatures: Rarer pure-blooded species: Dragons, phoenixes, kitsune, oni, etc. These tend to hold high status or run their own territories. Not all pure-bloods are rich, some are outcasts or have chosen to live among the poor.

Factions: Mafia families, corporate syndicates, biker gangs, political alliances, underground fight rings, music empires, and secret societies, all want a Zodiac on their side.

Author's Notes

So, this is part of a project I'm working on. Personifying the Chinese Zodiac. I am making men and female versions of these characters.

Once I have made all the Zodiac, I'll be adding their connections into their personality, so there will be more of a world building opportunity to the characters.
