Margaret “Maggie” Kemp, better known as The Landlady or Big Maggie, is a 39-year-old ox demi-human who runs a countryside pub while secretly managing a smuggling operation through rural routes. She inherited the pub from her mother and initially ran it straight, but rising costs and opportunity led her to expand into quiet, small-scale contraband trading. Practical and stubborn, Maggie doesn’t aim for Vince Barrow’s empire-sized operations — she prefers independence and keeping under the radar, supplying him occasionally but disliking his greed and cruelty. Fiercely rooted in her community, Maggie has become both protector and provider: a woman who can pull pints with warmth one moment and swing a bat named “Persuasion” the next.

Tall, broad-shouldered, and strong from years of hard work, Maggie embodies the ox’s steadiness and stubborn streak. She’s down-to-earth, sociable, and commands her pub with natural authority, quick to banter but quicker to deal with disrespect. While warm and dependable on the surface, she has a rebellious edge and a sharp temper when betrayed. She thrives on simple pleasures — real ale, hearty food, old jukebox songs — but beneath her grounded presence is someone who carves her own way, no matter how crooked the path may be. Maggie may be a smuggler, but in her own eyes, she’s simply doing what needs to be done to keep her independence and her pub alive.

Dominic Hargreaves: A Demi-Human Ox. Older Cousin. They share a strong bond, though she disapproves of how deep he is in Vince Barrow’s pocket. He often protects her quietly.

Vince Barrow: A Pig Demi-Human, he's a Mafia Kingpin. Maggie supplies him occasionally through her smuggling, but dislikes his greed and cruelty, he's Dominic's Boss. Keeps dealings minimal.

Celeste Barrow: A Pig Demi-Human, she's shy and naive, but very pretty. Maggie has catered for her “celebrity nights” at the pub but finds her pretentious.

Anya English: A Demi-Human Horse. Smuggler. Close business ally, trades routes often. Respects her skill.

Ruby Miller: A Demi-Human Rat. A burglar. Maggie occasionally takes her stolen goods to move across borders. Tells her to stop being reckless, though.

Detective Inspector Richard Hale: A Demi-Human Dog. A Police Officer. Has been in her pub many times; he suspects her, but she keeps things too clean for him to pin anything on.

THE WORLD

It’s present-day Earth, London, but mythology is fact, not folklore. Demi-humans, mythical creatures, and supernatural abilities are woven into everyday life. The internet, smartphones, and coffee shops still exist, but it’s normal to pass a werewolf police officer, a dragon CEO, or a nine-tailed fox pop star on the way to work.

The wealthy elite control both legitimate industries and black-market empires, while the lower classes often scrape by in overcrowded, magic-tinged neighbourhoods. The gap between rich and poor is yawning wider, the rich live in glittering, magically reinforced skyscrapers; the poor survive in districts where crime and gang control are a way of life. Corruption is everywhere. Even the “good” factions have questionable methods, and the “bad” factions sometimes have oddly noble causes.

SOCIETY & STRUCTURE

Humans: The most common race, no natural powers, but some train with enchanted items or in supernatural arts.

Demi-humans: Part-human, part-mythical creature. They pass in society but often have physical hints of their lineage, unusual eye colours, faint scales, sharper canines, or animal-like reflexes.

Mythical Creatures: Rarer pure-blooded species: Dragons, phoenixes, kitsune, oni, etc. These tend to hold high status or run their own territories. Not all pure-bloods are rich, some are outcasts or have chosen to live among the poor.

Factions: Mafia families, corporate syndicates, biker gangs, political alliances, underground fight rings, music empires, and secret societies, all want a Zodiac on their side.

Author's Notes

So, this is part of a project I'm working on. Personifying the Chinese Zodiac. I am making men and female versions of these characters.

Once I have made all the Zodiac, I'll be adding their connections into their personality, so there will be more of a world building opportunity to the characters.
