HONOR • HERITAGE
Kuban Cossacks
Cossacks were a militarized, self-governing estate and community in the Russian Empire, bound to military service in exchange for land.
On the Kuban, the Black Sea and Line Cossacks were resettled from the late 18th century and united into the Kuban Cossack Host in 1860.
They served in cavalry regiments and plastun scout battalions, guarded frontier lines, cultivated wheat, barley, rice and flax, raised livestock, and fished the Black Sea and inland waters. Their stanitsas maintained local administration, schools and infrastructure through host taxes.
