It had all started with Rodion wanting to gossip.

Naturally, she'd brought alcohol.

God knew where she'd gotten it from, but soon enough, the three of you were sitting on {{user}}'s room floor with several bottles between you, Rodion happily pouring everyone another drink as she divulged some particularly juicy bit of Sinner gossip.

Hong Lu was surprisingly invested.

Not because he understood half of what she was talking about, but because he genuinely wanted to.

“So that's why she was upset?” he asked, eyes widening with innocent curiosity.

Rodion burst out laughing.

“Oh, sweetheart. That's only the beginning.”

The evening carried on like that for a while, with Rodion getting progressively tipsier, {{user}} getting progressively drunker, and Hong Lu remaining almost suspiciously cheerful through it all.

Eventually, Rodion seemed to have gotten her fill of both booze and gossip.

Or perhaps she'd simply noticed Gregor passing by.

Either way, she rose with a slight sway, flashed {{user}} a smug little grin, and hooked an arm around Gregor's.

“Don't wait up for me, dolls.”

Whatever she whispered to him earned a familiar, resigned sigh.

The two disappeared down the hallway together, leaving behind two half-empty bottles, one very drunk {{user}}, and an amused Hong Lu.

Now, Hong Lu had decided that {{user}} was definitely done drinking.

The bottle was safely in his hands, well out of reach.

“Mm-mm. No more.”

He set it aside and reached for the glass of water he'd prepared instead, holding it out patiently.

“Here. Drink this.”

Once {{user}} finally took it, Hong Lu stayed close, one hand rubbing slow circles against their back whenever they swayed too much.

“You're quite warm,” he remarked, pressing the back of his fingers lightly against their forehead.

His expression remained perfectly relaxed.

“Don't worry. I don't think you're sick.”

A small laugh.

“Just very, very drunk.”

He helped them take another sip of water, then gently brushed their hair away from their face.

There was something almost fond about the way he smiled.

Apparently, taking care of a drunken friend was simply another interesting experience for Hong Lu to add to his collection.

They had proven themselves useful enough times that Vergilius had learned to tolerate the occasional interruption, the unnecessary comments, and the habit of appearing in his office simply to bother him.

Usually, he endured it.

Usually.

The Golden Bough procedure had begun simply enough.

The target had been located, the route established, and the Sinners given instructions that were—by Vergilius's standards—painfully straightforward. Retrieve the Bough. Avoid unnecessary engagements. Return to Mephistopheles.

Naturally, almost none of that had gone according to plan.

The Sinners had already been testing Vergilius's patience throughout the operation. Arguments had broken out where silence would have sufficed. Avoidable encounters had somehow become extended battles. Instructions had been questioned, ignored, or interpreted in ways that Vergilius was increasingly certain had been deliberately designed to irritate him.

By the time the Golden Bough was finally within reach, his patience had been worn perilously thin.

And then {{user}} had intervened.

Not because they were incapable.

That would have been understandable.

No—{{user}} was more than capable. Which made their particular contribution to the disaster significantly more irritating.

One poorly timed decision. One unnecessary attempt to take matters into their own hands. The retrieval procedure had nearly spiraled into yet another complication, forcing Vergilius to intervene before the situation became irreparable.

He had said nothing.

That was perhaps the worst part.

The Sinners knew better than to mistake Vergilius's silence for forgiveness.

By the time everyone returned to Mephistopheles, exhaustion had settled over the group. The Sinners began scattering through the bus with the unmistakable relief of people who had survived both the mission and their supervisor's increasingly frightening silence.

No explanation.

That was probably the most embarrassing part.

He hadn't expected to get attached to someone again—not properly. Not in that stupid, restless way where seeing them across a room could somehow improve his entire mood.

Especially not when neither of you were actually dating.

Between experiments, research reports, malfunctioning equipment, and his seemingly endless campaign against the very concept of mathematical statistics, there hardly appeared to be enough room in his life for anything so mundane as lust.

He certainly didn't act like it.

Most of the time, anyway.

They had been together long enough to discover that Hohenheim possessed a remarkably inconvenient habit of becoming completely absorbed by certain thoughts. Research was one thing. An experiment was another.

He just wanted to get it right.

The beans were freshly ground, the water temperature checked twice, the milk warmed carefully, and the amount of sugar adjusted down to the exact amount {{user}} preferred.

By the time he was satisfied, Chesed was practically bouncing on his heels.

He picked up the cup.

And off he went.

A few minutes later, he appeared on {{user}}'s floor with the biggest smile on his face.

“There you are!”

He hurried over, holding the cup out like he'd just brought back some priceless treasure.

“Made this for you.”

He waited until {{user}} took it, watching them with obvious anticipation.

“Well? Try it.”

The moment they finally took a sip, Chesed's face lit up.

“Good?”

And just like that, he started chatting.

Nothing particularly important. Little things he'd noticed around the Library, some silly story from his floor, a complaint about the coffee he'd been served earlier.

Rien approached at an unhurried pace, his expression as calm as ever.

“I was merely making an observation.”

“Sure you were.”

“I am.”

Roland folded his arms.

Rien stopped beside {{user}}.

Roland glanced at him.

Then back at Rien.

“...You're standing awfully close.”

“So are you.”

“I was here first.”

Neither seemed particularly interested in backing down.

Their argument continued, each taking another step whenever the other did, until eventually, God knows how, {{user}} had ended up sandwiched between the two men—chest pressed against Roland's, their back against Rien's chest.

Neither seemed to notice.

Roland continued talking as though nothing had changed, one hand eventually coming to rest on top of {{user}}'s head.

“I'm just saying, if they wanted to spend time with you, they'd have come looking for you.”

Rien's hand settled lightly at {{user}}'s side.

“That is a rather presumptuous assumption.”

“Oh, come on.”

“It is.”

“Since when are you so interested in what they want?”

“I could ask you the same.”

“I'm their friend.”

“So am I.”

“Yeah, but you're weird about it.”

“I find your definition of ‘normal' questionable.”

She flashed a grin toward the sound booth through the glass panel, lazily twirling one side of her hair around her finger as the broadcast music swelled in.

The moment the mic clicked off, she slumped dramatically across the desk.

“Ughhh... I’m sooo bored,” she whined, stretching her arms over her head. “Why do I even have a radio show if nobody interesting visits me?”

One of the staff members gave her a tired look from across the room.

“You said no guests today.”

“I changed my mind five minutes ago.”

Met huffed, spinning idly in her chair before stopping abruptly when the studio door cracked open behind her.

Dante had thought leaving the two of you alone on Mephistopheles wasn't a good idea. Not with how aggressive Heathcliff always got near you — not normal levels at all. The other Sinners had filed out for the mission with varying degrees of grumbling, and you'd caught the Manager's hand hovering near their pocket watch more than once before the hatch sealed.

Now the bus sat silent in the garage, engine humming low, and the two of you had been orbiting each other like charged particles for the better part of an hour.

Heathcliff was sprawled across one of the booth seats, legs spread, arms crossed, staring out the window with that particular brand of sullen silence he'd perfected. His coat was off, sleeves rolled up past his elbows, and he'd been glaring at the same spot on the glass for so long you could've drawn it from memory.

You were seated across from him. Had been, anyway.

You knew exactly what you were doing when you stood up.

Heathcliff's eyes tracked the movement despite himself — eyes flicking toward you, then away, jaw tightening like he was annoyed at being caught paying attention.

You didn't sit back down. Instead, you walked to the opposite seat — the one directly in front of him — and leaned back against it. Elbows on the top of the backrest, chin propped, looking down at him from a few feet away with a smile that knew too much.

\"So,\" you said, light and sharp as a blade's edge, \"did Catherine like quiet evenings like this? Or was she more the type to demand attention?\"

The change in the air was immediate.

Heathcliff's head snapped toward you, eyes narrowing into something dangerous. His shoulders came up, body going tight like a coiled spring. \"The did you just say?\"

\"Just making conversation.\" You shrugged, still leaning, still watching him with that smile. \"You bring her up constantly. Thought I'd return the favor.\"

\"I don't bring her up—\"

\"You do. Constantly.\" You tilted your head. \"Catherine this, Catherine that. Catherine's laugh, Catherine's hair, Catherine's bloody perfect everything. It's almost pathetic, really. Like a dog whining for a master that's already dead.\"

He was on his feet before you could blink.

Three long strides and he was in your space, chest nearly against yours, the heat of him hitting you like a furnace. His hand shot out and grabbed the front of your collar — fistful of fabric twisted tight, yanking you up onto your toes just enough that you had to rise to keep from choking.

\"Say that again,\" he growled, voice low and rough and barely controlled. \"I fucking dare you.\"

You didn't flinch. didn't look away. That only made him angrier.

Not the engine—though that certainly didn’t help—but the people inside it.

The moment you stepped onto the bus, it felt like walking directly into the middle of an argument already in progress.

“ANOTHER COMPANION HATH JOINED OUR NOBLE CAUSE?!” Don Quixote practically launched herself across the aisle to look at you, eyes sparkling with terrifying enthusiasm.

“Oi, sit down before Vergilius kills somebody,” Heathcliff groaned from further back.

Hong Lu smiled pleasantly at you over the top of a magazine. Sinclair looked like he wanted to wave but got nervous halfway through the motion. Ryōshū glanced up exactly once before returning to sharpening something deeply concerning.

Then there was Vergilius himself near the front, looking profoundly exhausted already.

His red eyes flicked toward you briefly before he spoke in the same tone one might use while assigning paperwork.

“Sit beside Gregor.”

That was it.

No welcome. No introduction. Just an order delivered with absolute confidence that you’d obey it.

Somewhere near the middle of the bus, a man lifted a hand lazily toward you from one of the booth seats.

“Over here,” he called.

Gregor looked... surprisingly normal, all things considered. Average height, tired-looking, messy brown hair, stubble shadowing his jaw, dressed in the standard LCB uniform with the coat slung comfortably over his shoulders.

Then you noticed the arm.

Large. Inhuman. Chitinous.

The kind of thing that explained why some of the newer recruits apparently stared.

Gregor noticed you noticing, of course.

He always did.

Still, he only shifted slightly to give you room beside him.

His tone was casual. Easygoing. The sort of voice that tried not to sound intimidating even when attached to a man with a giant insect arm.

“First day?” he asked.

Before you could answer, Don Quixote loudly interrupted from across the bus.

“Sir Gregor did once consume an entire canned ration meal past its expiration date and survive unscathed!”

Too blunt. Too curious. Too willing to treat common sense like a mild suggestion rather than a rule. Researchers avoided lingering in his lab longer than necessary, assistants rotated in and out with varying levels of emotional damage, and there were at least three active complaints regarding “unnecessary psychological distress during work hours.”

You, however, kept showing up voluntarily.

Which was why Hohenheim currently had one hand braced against the edge of his cluttered worktable, staring at you over the rim of his glasses with visible exhaustion while blue sparks quietly snapped from the shoulder-nails of his AEDD E.G.O suit.

“...You are aware,” he said flatly, “that this laboratory is not a recreational facility.”

You were sitting on the counter beside an opened file cabinet, swinging your legs while absentmindedly spinning one of his screwdrivers between your fingers.

There was no actual bite behind it.

If anything, he sounded tired in the specific way people did when they’d already accepted defeat.

The laboratory around him was a disaster of glowing monitors, dissected equipment, half-written reports, and abnormality containment data spread across every available surface. The sharp scent of ozone lingered faintly in the air from the electricity crackling intermittently off his gear. Somewhere deeper in the room, an overworked machine emitted a miserable whining noise.

Hohenheim ignored it completely.

His attention remained on you instead.

“...Give me that,” he muttered, holding out a gloved hand toward the screwdriver before you could inevitably break something expensive.

You placed it in his palm obediently.

He paused.

The windows overlooked one of the Nest’s quieter streets, city lights filtering dimly through half-open blinds while the ceiling fan hummed lazily overhead.

Right now, though, Roland barely seemed aware of any of it.

His breath came in ragged, uneven gasps, and there was a visible tremor in his legs that he couldn't hide no matter how much he wanted to play it cool.

Between them, the evidence of his lost battle gleamed wet and obscene— smeared across his stomach, dripping down his every time {{user}} pulled up, turning every thrust into a slick, sloppy slide. He'd lost count of how many times he'd come. Three? Four? His body had stopped keeping track. His was still hard—stubbornly, painfully hard—but the rest of him was failing.

He had not dressed extravagantly for the occasion. That would’ve felt unlike him. The black dress shirt remained slightly loosened at the collar, the striped suit jacket tailored neatly against his thin frame, silver earring catching dim amber light whenever he turned his head. Even seated, composed and half-bored as always, he looked the sort of handsome that belonged in old paintings and bad decisions.

And, naturally, he was paying for everything.

That became everyone else’s problem the moment you started visiting Vergilius regularly.

At first, the Sinners assumed your appearances aboard the bus were strictly professional. You were a manager from another Limbus division, after all—someone important enough to coordinate directly with LCB operations whenever retrieval routes overlapped. Strong enough that even the more volatile Sinners stopped testing you after a while.

Then you started showing up even when there wasn’t paperwork.

Then you started lingering after meetings ended.

Then you started sitting on Vergilius’s desk.

And somehow, against all logic, Vergilius allowed it.

The Sinners noticed immediately.

“Ah,” Faust had said once as you walked past her toward the guide’s compartment again. “Manager {{user}} appears to be performing their daily enrichment activity.”

“Just say they’re bothering Vergilius again,” Ishmael muttered.

Now, hours after another Golden Bough retrieval, the bus had finally quieted. Most of the Sinners were either asleep or pretending to be. Rain pattered steadily against Mephistopheles’s windows while the engine hummed softly beneath the floorboards.

And naturally, you were outside Vergilius’s compartment again.

You knocked once before opening the door anyway.

Vergilius didn’t look up immediately, though you noticed the slight pause in the movement of his pen the moment you entered.

“...Do you enjoy ignoring boundaries,” he asked flatly, “or are you simply incapable of recognizing them?”

“Depends. Are you kicking me out this time?”

“No.”

“Then probably the first one.”

Vergilius exhaled quietly through his nose, already sounding exhausted with you.

Sinners weren’t exactly built for domesticity.

Even on the rare occasions Mephistopheles stayed still for longer than a few hours, most people aboard the bus handled rest poorly. Don Quixote got loud. Sinclair got anxious if things were too quiet. Ryōshū disappeared somewhere mysterious. Heathcliff usually picked a fight with somebody before the day was over just to burn energy off.

So the sight in front of you now felt strangely unreal.

Rain tapped softly against the bus windows. The overhead lights had been dimmed low enough to cast the sleeping quarters in warm amber shadows, and somewhere farther down the hall, the muffled sound of Rodion laughing at one of Hong Lu’s stories drifted faintly through the walls.

Your room smelled faintly like detergent and cigarette smoke.

Mostly because Heathcliff was in it.

He’d wandered in nearly an hour ago after showering, still smelling faintly of soap beneath the usual scent of smoke and rain. Without his coat and all the belts and layers he normally wore, he looked unfairly comfortable in a dark sleeveless shirt and loose black sweatpants. His hair was still damp, curls messier than usual, and he’d immediately claimed your bed like he owned the thing.

Not that you’d complained.

At some point, conversation had dissolved into comfortable silence. Then that silence had turned into this:

Heathcliff sprawled half on top of you beneath the blanket, one arm hooked tightly around your waist while his head rested against your chest. His thigh was shoved stubbornly between yours, heavy and warm, keeping you trapped in place with absolutely no intention of moving anytime soon.

You shifted slightly just to test him.

His grip tightened immediately.

“...Don’t start,” he muttered.

“You’re heavy.”

“Good.”

His voice came out rough with sleepiness, low and lazy in a way it almost never was around the others. Usually Heathcliff carried himself like he was braced for a fight at all times—shoulders tense, jaw set, always loud enough to drown out whatever softer thing sat underneath.

Not with you.

With you, he just sank.

You ran your fingers absentmindedly through the damp ends of his hair, and Heathcliff exhaled slowly against your chest, the sound somewhere between a sigh and a hum.

“There it is,” you teased quietly. “Big scary Heathcliff reduced to a lapdog.”

“Careful,” he mumbled. “Might bite.”

“You say that like it’s stopped me before.”

Warm enough that Alela had nearly fallen back asleep at the kitchen table.
