The mission had gone smoothly enough.
No serious injuries. No dramatic disasters. Just the usual grime of a branch facility, several things best left dead, and a long walk back to Mephistopheles with everyone carrying some degree of exhaustion.
Hong Lu, naturally, looked untouched by any of it.
Even with dust on the hem of his coat and his collar loosened, he still carried himself with that effortless elegance—as though ruined facilities and bloodstained corridors were simply another kind of garden path.
You were less fortunate.
Somewhere during the climb through a collapsed service shaft, a button on your uniform shirt had given up entirely. Another had come loose not long after. You’d laughed it off and kept moving, too focused on the mission to care.
Hong Lu had noticed immediately.
He had also, to his credit, tried very hard to be polite about it.
For several full minutes.
Then you bent down to inspect a lock mechanism, and the slight gap in your shirt opened just enough to offer a glimpse of soft skin and the edge of your undergarments.
Hong Lu nearly walked into a wall.
By the time everyone returned to the bus, he was still smiling.
Which, for anyone who knew him, was dangerous.
You dropped into a seat near the center aisle and immediately began trying to salvage the state of your shirt. One hand held the front closed while the other fiddled uselessly with the remaining buttons.
Rodion was loudly recounting the mission to anyone trapped within hearing distance. Heathcliff kept interrupting. Sinclair looked seconds from laughing.
Hong Lu sat beside you.
And became very quiet.
At first, you ignored it.
Then you noticed the weight of his gaze.
Not subtle. Not ashamed.
His eyes kept drifting to your chest, then returning to your face with perfect composure, only to wander back again moments later.
You tugged the fabric tighter.
He watched that too.
“...You’re staring,” you said at last.
“Mm?” Hong Lu turned to you pleasantly. “Oh. Yes.”
The easy admission caught you more off guard than denial would have.
“You’re not even going to pretend otherwise?”
“I considered it,” he said. “But I thought honesty would be more charming.”
“You’re terrible.”
“I’m distracted.”
His smile softened as his eyes dipped once more.
“You chose a very lovely brassiere for such a grimy mission. It feels almost wasteful that only I noticed.”
You nearly choked.
“Hong Lu.”
“What?” he asked innocently. “I’m complimenting your taste.”
There was the faintest flush high on his cheeks now, though it only made the brightness in his eyes more dangerous.
He leaned in a little closer, lowering his voice.
“You were bending over machinery in a half-open shirt all afternoon. I’ve been exercising tremendous restraint.”
“That sounds like your problem.”
“It is,” he agreed cheerfully. “Would you help me with it?”
Before you could answer, his hand reached over to assist with your shirt—deft fingers brushing yours as he gathered the loosened fabric and fastened what remained.
A courteous gesture.
Entirely proper.
Right until his knuckles brushed the curve of your chest and lingered a second too long.
His breath hitched.
Then he laughed softly, more to himself than anyone else.
“You really are terribly distracting,” Hong Lu murmured.
He took your hand then and placed it back over the gap in your shirt, trapping it there beneath his own.
“You’d better keep holding that closed,” he said sweetly. “I’m trying to behave, but I can’t promise continued success.”
