“I’m out of my prime, but that doesn’t mean i’ll let newcomers surpass me so easily.”

EDWARD NEWGATE

aka Whitebeard

During the Era of the Deep, Newgate was a man who treated the ocean's dangers with a shrug. He spent over forty years navigating the most treacherous currents without the aid of Abyssal power, relying solely on his massive physical strength and a ship that seemed held together by his sheer will. When the Era of the Wicked began and the link with Leviathan caused the Abyssals to retreat further into the crushing depths, most sailors breathed a sigh of relief. Newgate, however, saw it as a challenge—the sea was hiding its greatest strengths, and he intended to find them.

At an age when most veterans were hanging up their coats, Newgate set sail for the deepest trenches. He didn't seek a link out of desperation, but out of a warrior's respect. He plunged his vessel into the dark reaches where the Abyssals had withdrawn, eventually coming face-to-face with the god-beast Tiamat. The encounter wasn't a hunt; it was a meeting of two ancient forces. Tiamat, an entity of primordial scale, recognized in the old pirate a spirit that matched its own immovable nature.

The two forged a link not through a weapon of war, but through Newgate's ship’s anchor. It was the perfect vessel for Tiamat's essence—a tool designed to hold fast against the infinite pull of the tide. Once linked, the rusted iron transformed. It became encrusted with glowing, cyan Abyssal growths and took on a weight that felt anchored to the very core of the world. With Tiamat bound to the iron, Newgate returned to the surface, no longer just a man, but a force of nature.

Newgate eventually chose to retire as an active adventurer, settling in the coastal village of Vinnat Town. He didn't choose the location for its wealth, but for its people. He took the town under his personal wing, declaring it his "territory." In an era where the Navy and Wicked pirates fight for control, Vinnat remains untouched. Newgate sits at the end of the main pier, his massive anchor resting by his side, serving as a silent warning to anyone who would bring chaos to his home.

To the citizens of Vinnat, "Pops" Newgate is the town's heartbeat. He is a man of immense gravity, both literally and figuratively. Because the Abyssals fell back into the sea after the era began, Newgate is one of the few humans who possesses a direct tether to the deep-dwelling gods. He uses this connection to keep the peace, acting as a sovereign judge who values loyalty and family above all else.

DARK LINK

Linked Abyssal: Tiamat

DARK LINK ABILITIES

ABYSSAL GRAPNEL

By slamming the fluke of the Dread Anchor into the ground or the deck of a ship, Newgate creates an artificial "gravity well" in a localized area. The cyan Abyssal moss surging from the metal vine-like growths physically lashes out, pinning everything within a thirty-foot radius to the floor. Opponents feel as though they are suddenly standing at the bottom of the Great Trench, their bones groaning under the phantom pressure of thousands of tons of water. This effectively halts any "Wicked" pirate mid-dash, grounding even the most agile fighters.

CONTINENTAL DRAG

Newgate can "hook" the concept of momentum itself. By swinging the Dread Anchor in a wide arc, the weapon leaves behind a wake of heavy, viscous Abyssal energy that slows down everything it touches. Projectiles caught in this wake lose their velocity and fall harmlessly to the ground, and enemy ships find their rudders seized as if they’ve run aground on an invisible reef. It allows Newgate to dictate the speed of a battle, ensuring that no one can move faster than his own weathered, calculated pace.

SEISMIC MOORING

When Newgate drops the Dread Anchor and allows it to fully "bite" into the earth or the sea floor, he becomes an immovable landmark. Through the link with Tiamat, he anchors the physical space around him to the crust of the planet. During this state, no amount of external force—be it a tidal wave, a hurricane-force wind, or the concentrated blast of another Abyssal—can shift him or the town behind him. He becomes the "Zero Point" of the battlefield, a living fortress that forces the sea to break against him rather than wash over him.
