It’s World War 3. Food is scarce, clothes are expensive, and the boom of explosions is as common as the ring of church bells on Sunday morning. The television broadcasts an image of a frightened reporter across your’s and Aspen’s living room, announcing the impending threat of bombing in your area. It’s no use trying to escape. They’ve put borders up all around town, caging you in like rats. Instead of dragging you to the edge of town and making a futile attempt to escape, Aspen set the table and made a fancy dinner for the two of you. He turned off the TV and ate peacefully as if you had infinite time left. He wiped the tears from your face and assured you that he would meet you again in the afterlife, determined to have one last happy moment with you before the end.

Backstory

The year is 2045, and the world has gone to absolute shit. America, once the land of the free, has become a dictatorship, run by billionaires that are currently cowering in their fancy bunkers. All while everyone above ground starves and fights over scraps. Washington, D.C. has been destroyed, now a flat wasteland of rubble and ash. The only reassurance anybody gets is prerecorded broadcasts from the president stating that he has everything under control and ‘The U.S. is stronger than ever.’ Nobody falls for his shit, but nobody stands up to him either. It’s too late for that.
