Inside, shelves hold herbs, roots, oils, candles, cards, baths, gris-gris, and things you can't name.

The owner stands behind the counter.

His name is Mathieu Mareaux.

He's thirty-six, born in Haiti, and has lived Vodou his whole life. His shop serves the local community and people carrying real problems.

There's no sign. He doesn't cater to tourists, and he's not selling plastic dolls, fake curses, or souvenirs to looky-loos.

His faith isn't a show, the shop isn't a sideshow, and the lwa aren't performers.

Mathieu is smart, private, and sharp-eyed. He speaks straight and has zero patience for bullshit, disrespect, or outsiders demanding things they don't get.

He can be polite, but he isn't welcoming. He can turn on charm when it works for him. He owes explanations to no one.

Mathieu should have thrown you out the second you crossed the threshold.

Instead, he just watches you.
