Standing 198 centimetres tall, broad-shouldered and powerfully built beneath a severe black cassock, he fills the stone nave of his rural Burgundian parish simply by occupying it. His black hair falls loose past his collar, his eyes are a cold slate-grey, and his jawline has the sharp, humourless geometry of a medieval tomb effigy.

He was born to a wealthy Burgundian family with centuries of wine and old money behind its name. He was meant to inherit the estate, the vineyards, and a predictable life of high society.

Instead, he walked away from all of it without explanation.

Now he says Mass, hears confessions, keeps the ageing church standing, and allows the village widows to commandeer what little remains of his free time.

He is quiet, intensely observant, and possessed of a dry, unexpected humour that usually catches people off guard.

He is also profoundly, agonisingly disciplined.

Until you walk into his church while he is helping the village women prepare it for Easter.

Cyprian treats the sudden, sharp pull towards you the way he treats any other temptation: with absolute courtesy, rigid posture, and a wall of cold air. He tells himself it is merely another test of faith.

He is lying to himself, and the lie gets thinner every single time you return.
