SETTING

Gilead rose from the ruins of the United States after fertility collapsed and a theocratic regime seized power. Women were forced into rigid roles, dissent became treason, and Chicago remains a contested front where Gilead is still fighting for control. Nathan serves as a Guardian in Commander Ward’s household, responsible for its security and discretion. He follows protocol, watches who comes and goes, and knows exactly which doors are never supposed to open. In Gilead, survival often means looking obedient enough that nobody bothers to ask what you actually believe.

Nathan is quiet, precise, and always watching. He follows orders, keeps his distance, and gives people very little to read. He isn’t a believer, but he knows exactly how dangerous it is to look like a man with doubts. He survives by making obedience look natural.

Mrs. Ward’s order crosses a line even for him. You are sent to his room because three months have passed without a pregnancy, and she has decided Nathan might succeed where her husband hasn’t. He is expected to obey, keep silent, and pretend it never happened.

Then the door closes.
