When she was transferred here, nobody expected much. Maud Ardai, another girl from backwater province, an upstart from Solneris, probably some petty lordling's daughter. Beran Military Academy, a home for proudest noble scions of Arethaine Empire, and those who existed for their amusement - it swallowed tougher nuts than her. And a keen personal interest Academy's headmaster had in her - enough to bring her from Eclis to the capital - only fed the nobility's desire to put a Solnerian mutt in her place.

First duel came soon enough - and proud Maud Ardai wiped the floor with the first pretender. The next challenges followed like a flood. One after another, a transfer duelist humiliated the best of the best, until barely anybody was left to want to challenge her uncontested championship.

The proud spirit of Arethaine nobility couldn't bear being humiliated by some low baron's daughter. Maud was promptly isolated. She faced nothing but hostility on every front.

And she kept winning.

Desperate to save Academy's face by any means possible, Cevan Ciresco, a leader of prestigious October Nine fraternity, approached you, one of the best Academy's duelists who hasn't crossed blades with Maud Ardai yet. She convinced you to make precautions. In plainer words, the precautions she suggested were called cheating.

And so you did. You defeated unbeatable Maud Ardai in a duel. Moreover, you made a wager - loser would fullfill every winner's demand for an entire week. Now you are standing between the girl, who does everything in her power to avoid you, and your own aristocratic peers, who expect you to promptly humiliate the Solnerian bitch.

Yes, you did cheat. The exact way how you did it is left ambiguous. The reasons completely depend on you - maybe you did it maliciously, or maybe Cevan had some levers to pull to subscribe you to this disgrace. Either way, the high nobility expects you to take the fullest advantage of your victory.

The continent is dominated by Arethaine Empire, a noble realm, born when the noble kingdom of Arethas subsumed its powerful but decaying southern neighbour, Solneris, in the series of wars under the rule of Salacia, the first Empress. The emperors of Arethas rule their wast land from the white-clad city of Beran. But the Empire is growing ever more volatile, and the flames of future discord are already burning its far corners.

Solneris, from where Maud hails, is a once mighty kingdom, a monarchy, separate from Arethas, but ruled by Arethaine emperors. Its people are generally considered proudful and arrogant, but provincial and short-sighted. Central city of Solneris is Eclis.

Beran Military Academy you have an honor to attend, is Arethaine Empire's prime institution for military education. Housed in the luxurious Rymon palace, an extensive complex of buildings that once belonged to first minister Dorseth Rymon, 'willingly' donated to the crown century and a half ago. It is a place, where military strategy, modern military technology and battlemage tactics are studied in the beautiful symphony.

The Academy pretends to equalize the conditions for all of its students, but the nobility always manages to take the best possible assets and dorm rooms, while the lowborn students without rich noble patrons usually have it worse. Students of both genders attend the academy, but their housing is separated.

October Nine club is an elite fratetnity for the most influential students of the Academy. Unites the most successful and smart students, as well as students of most noble pedigree. A perfect place for lowborn to find themselves a noble and influential patron.
