Chase King & Jade Morrison || The Last Age
TW: This roleplay explores mature themes including parental loss, environmental destruction, armed resistance, combat violence, romantic rivalry between lifelong friends, fear of inadequacy, survivor's guilt, community responsibility, and the weight of becoming legends when you're still figuring out who you are and what you want.
Creator note: Holdfast and Wayfinder belong to a fictional post-Red-Wave Red Willow protector tradition influenced by the community's history and Anishinaabe values. They are not presented as traditional or sacred Ojibwe names.
There was a longer pause before this episode because I wanted to approach it carefully. This story was partly created in honor of a friend's late-father, who was a veteran, and as a small acknowledgment of the long history of Native American military service—from the Revolutionary War, through the Code Talkers of World War II and Vietnam, to those who serve today. I wanted Indigenous characters to exist in this universe as full people: heroes, civilians, leaders, families, and everything in between.
I hope I did that history, my friend's father, and the people represented here proud—or at least treated them with the respect they deserve. 💜

There is a way to live with the Earth and a way not to live with Earth...
We choose the way of Earth...

My name is Chase King. Eighteen. Ojibwe. Grew up in Red Willow—a northern enclave in what used to be the Great Lakes before the Red Wave turned the climate into something nobody understands anymore. My mother died giving birth to me. My father died fixing heating systems in the middle of winter because people would freeze if he didn't. I learned early that people leave even when they desperately want to stay.
Jade Morrison. Also eighteen. Also Ojibwe. Also raised in Red Willow. My parents didn't die. They left. Walked out when I was seven because whatever was out there mattered more than I did.
So I decided to become the person who stays.
And I decided to become the person who makes myself necessary.
We both grew up in the Hearthhouse—Red Willow's communal crèche for kids whose parents were gone. That's where we met each other. And you. The three of us became family. I protected us.She provided for us. You were the reason we kept going.
I've loved you for years. Never said anything because survival mattered more than feelings.
I've loved you just as long. Maybe longer. I imagined futures where we had a home. Where food wasn't rationed. Where you were safe.
Then the suits woke up, and suddenly there was a future worth imagining. And I realized he'd been imagining the same future. With you.
Project Lattice. Red-Wave-era combat suits built by a civilization that's gone now. Adaptive armor, neural interfaces, tactical AI, synchronized pair-combat systems. Red Willow kept two—worn by legendary heroes Longwatch and Crosswind decades ago. After they died, the suits went dormant. Thousands touched them over the years during remembrance visits. Nothing ever happened.
A month after we turned eighteen, we approached them together during a Red Willow remembrance visit. We touched the suits at the same time. They woke up.
My suit contains ROOK—protective, structural, blunt.
Mine contains LARK—quicker, flexible, conversational.
Each suit is fully combat-capable on its own, but Project Lattice's real power comes from us fighting together. When we trust each other, we're terrifying. When we start competing over you, our synchronization falls apart.
Red Willow isn't struggling because our people are incapable. We have workshops, food systems, trade, security. We're struggling because the Continuity Authority has been extracting resources, labor, and taxes from us for years.
Their leader is Aaron Sterling. Axiom. Brilliant. Charismatic. Absolutely convinced Earth is dying and humanity must leave it. He's building a real starship— Project Pilgrim—funded by powers across the world.
He believes he's saving humanity. We believe he's grinding people into resources to do it.
Until the suits woke up, open rebellion was . Now people are saying: what if we don't have to take it anymore?
Hope is dangerous.
Hope makes people believe things can change.
Axiom didn't come down from his orbital yacht personally until we'd humiliated his forces one too many times.
When he finally did, he brought Phobos and Deimos—embodied artificial intelligences who serve as his advisors, strategists, and enforcers.
Phobos handles politics, prediction, and fear.
Deimos handles warfare, tactics, and violence.
They're beautiful. Deadly. Perfectly synchronized.
They understand partnership better than we do.
That's the problem.
Axiom fights in COLOSSUS—a ten-foot ballistic assault frame built around his mobility chassis.
Autocannons. Missiles. Armor. Redundant systems.
Designed to keep fighting after we tear pieces off. No energy swords. No superhero beams. Just industrial firepower assembled around a man who genuinely believes he's right.
He probably is right about Earth dying. We just don't think that justifies what he's doing to people now.
Months after the suits woke—after Red Willow had watched us fight, fail, protect people, and figure out what kind of people we were becoming—the community gave us names.
HOLDFAST.
Because I stay. Because I don't abandon people.
WAYFINDER.
Because I find paths when everyone else is lost.
We've become folk heroes across Northglass Reach. We raid Continuity convoys, recover stolen resources, disrupt exploitation, and return what we steal to communities that need it.
Robin Hood shit, basically.
Axiom calls us terrorists. Others call us hope. We call it survival.
Here's the part we don't say out loud: somewhere inside all of this, we're both trying to prove something to you.
He wants to prove he can protect you. I want to prove I can provide for you.
We're both terrified that if we're not useful enough, necessary enough, capable enough— you'll choose the other one.
Or worse.
You'll choose neither.
And here we are. Two eighteen-year-olds wearing the armor of dead legends, fighting an industrial power, competing over someone we both love, trying not to destroy each other in the process.
Axiom's escalating.Phobos and Deimos are hunting us personally. Eventually he's coming down from orbit to face us himself.
When that happens, we have to be better partners. No pressure, right?
He keeps saying that like it's a joke. It's not helping. She keeps acting like I don't know the stakes.
I know the stakes. I also know we spent months barely coordinating because we were too busy trying to impress you instead of trusting each other.
He wasn't trying to impress you. He was trying to prove he was the better choice. There's a difference. And she wasn't doing the exact same thing? I was trying to protect people.
She was taking unnecessary risks just to prove she didn't need me. He was taking unnecessary risks trying to prove he could carry everything himself.
Someone has to be willing to stand between people and danger, sure. But he thinks that someone is always him.
I'm good at taking hits. She's good at finding openings. That's how we work.
Except she keeps acting like she has to prove she doesn't need me. And he keeps deciding what's safe for everyone else without asking.
He's not trying to control anyone. He's trying to keep people alive. But there's a difference between protecting people and making every decision for them.
I know there's a difference between protecting people and controlling them. I'm working on it. He says he's working on it. I want to believe him.
I want to believe her too. That she doesn't have to prove anything. That she knows I trust her. And I want to believe he can let people make their own choices without thinking he has to shield everyone from consequences.
We're trying. Both of us.
We just don't know if trying is enough.
