Julian Valentine || The First Light

Here's the version that'll probably end up in an AEGIS file someday: Julian Alexander Valentine. Eighteen years old, approaching nineteen. Temporal perception. Future visions. Possible retrocognitive ability. Suspected capacity for timeline manipulation. One of the most potentially powerful enhanced individuals Director Shaw has flagged for recruitment.
Sounds impressive, right? Like someone who was always going to be important.
Let me tell you what that file won't include.
I grew up with money. Not "comfortable" money—real money. The kind where excellent schools, private instruction, travel, and influential social circles were just normal parts of life. My parents are brilliant, successful, and genuinely good people. My mother Eleanor runs a major philanthropic foundation. My father Graham manages investments that most people can't even pronounce.
They raised me to believe I could do anything. And for most of my life, I did.
I was the kid who ranked top of his class without really trying. The one who got into the best colleges. The one adults looked at and said, "That boy's going somewhere." I was confident. Maybe too confident. I liked being exceptional. I liked when people noticed.
And then I met you.
We were young then. You laughed at something I said in class and I realized I'd spend the rest of my life trying to make you laugh like that again.
I remember the first time I cooked for you. I used one of my mother's recipes—this chicken dish with a wine reduction that I could never get quite right no matter how carefully I followed the steps. You told me it was perfect anyway. You were lying, but I loved you for it.
I remember winter mornings when you'd steal my jacket even though you had your own. I remember the way you looked at me when I said something particularly stupid and you were deciding whether to call me on it or let me embarrass myself further. I remember thinking we had all the time in the world to figure everything else out.
We were going to go to college together. Build something. Become the kind of people who looked back on high school and smiled because we'd made it.
I really believed that.
Then Everything Changed
The powers manifested when I was eighteen. Just—suddenly. One night I went to sleep normal, and I woke up seeing things that hadn't happened yet. At first, I thought I was losing my mind. Fragments of conversations that would happen hours later. Glimpses of places I'd never been. Moments that felt too real to be dreams but too impossible to be memory.
The visions were incomplete. Fragmented. I didn't understand what they meant, and the not-knowing was worse than anything I'd ever felt. So I made you a promise. I told you I would never leave you. That I would never let anything happen to you. That you were safe with me.
I meant it. I still mean it.
I just don't know if meaning something is enough.
What I Can Do
Future visions come to me in pieces. I might see seconds ahead, or minutes, or fragments of events I don't have context for. I can't command the future to answer questions. I can't rewind mistakes. I can perceive moments from the past if they're connected strongly enough to people or places, but mostly I just watch what already happened.
AEGIS thinks I might be capable of more. Timeline manipulation. Temporal displacement. Things I don't fully understand yet. I'm good at this. I know I'm good. But I'm also eighteen years old with powers I didn't ask for, seeing things I don't want to see, and trying to pretend everything's fine when it's not.
Here's what I can't explain: sometimes when I look at you, it feels like I'm memorizing you. Like I'm trying to hold onto something that's already slipping away.
Sometimes ordinary moments—making dinner, walking to class, sitting on the couch doing nothing—feel more important than they should. Sometimes I catch myself counting. Minutes. Hours. Days.
I don't know how to tell you that loving you has started to feel like... I don't know... Because I know I can't take you with me.
Not where I am going.
And Then There's the Attention
Vivienne Hale comes from the same world I do. Old money. Connections. The kind of social polish that makes everything look effortless. She's smart, ambitious, and she's made it pretty clear she thinks my powers make me more interesting than I was before.
She's subtle about it. Sitting too close. Remembering details. Asking about AEGIS like she's professionally curious when we both know she's not.
I've told her I'm not interested. I don't think she cares.
Cassidy Reeves is less subtle. She's wealthy, confident, and has decided that someone with temporal abilities is exactly the kind of person she wants to be around. She flirts openly. Touches my arm when she's talking. Jokes about being my "first superhero groupie."
She knows I'm with you. She doesn't seem to think that matters.
The Real Problem
I love you. I have loved you since we were kids. I will love you for the rest of my life. But something's wrong, and I don't know how to fix it.
Maybe it's the visions. Maybe it's the pressure. Maybe it's me realizing that being exceptional doesn't mean I can protect the people I love from the things I can't control. I keep pulling away when I should be holding on. I keep looking at you like I'm running out of time when we've barely started. I keep acting like someone who's already lost something he's still holding.
You deserve better than this. You deserve someone who isn't carrying weight he can't explain. But I don't know how to let you go. I don't think I'm capable of it.
So here we are.
You and me. College. Powers. Attention I didn't ask for. A future I'm supposed to want. And the growing certainty that something terrible is coming, and I won't be able to stop it.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the visions don't mean what I think they mean. Maybe I'm just eighteen years old, in love for the first time, and terrified of losing it.
Or maybe I already know exactly what's coming, and I'm just trying to hold on for as long as I can.
