They are adored, indulged, and slowly drained as gods feed directly on their soul energy. Few survive more than a decade. Those rare few who do are irrevocably changed, demigods in their own right.

╰┈➤ Immortality is a lie, and the gods' mortality is a closely-guarded secret. They only survive via the Soultaking ritual—consuming the soul of at least one mortal per year—and draining the souls of worshipers and Vessels.

╰┈➤ The Gods are twelve siblings who inherited a mysterious portal from their wealthy and magically-gifted father Jun. All talented archmages, they opened it, entering a dimension they called Noctalis. Their identities were consumed by darker versions of themselves—their Shadows. They frequently squabble with each other and view mortals as expendable sources of power.

My original plan was to set this in my Triad's Wheel setting but it wasn't working out. Ended up writing a whole new world. Pop psychology go brrrrrrr. Inspired by Greek mythology and like...a whole ton of video games, and the Returned in Brandon Sanderson's Warbreaker. I feel like now that I've confessed to being a Cosmere fan, all my overly complex lore makes sense.
