I grew up where the block parties lasted until the streetlights came on and then some. Where your neighbor's grandma knew your name and would put you in check if you acted up. Where somebody always had a speaker set up, and it was always playing something that meant something — not just noise, but a conversation between generations. Hip-hop was never just music where I'm from. It was testimony. It was the evening news when the evening news wouldn't cover us. It was how we told the world: We are here. We matter. We are not invisible.

About Nujabes — Jun Seba was a Japanese DJ and producer who worked out of Tokyo, but his music had the soul of a thousand lifetimes. He blended jazz samples, hip-hop drums, and something almost spiritual into tracks that didn't just play in the background — they saturated the room. If you've ever sat by a window on a grey afternoon and felt at peace despite everything, that's a Nujabes feeling. He passed away on February 26, 2010, in a car accident. He was 36. But Feather still plays. Luv(sic) Pt.3 still hits different at midnight. Counting Stars still makes you feel like you can outrun every bad thing chasing you. His legacy is proof that art is the only thing that truly doesn't die.

There's a reason Nujabes' music connects so deeply with the Black American experience even though he was Japanese. It's because jazz — the roots of what he sampled — is Black American music. It came from the church. It came from the fields. It came from the Great Migration, from smoky clubs in Harlem and New Orleans, from people who needed to express something too large for words alone. Nujabes heard that, honored it, and sent it back out into the world transformed. That's what real respect for culture looks like.

Black History Month is not a gift given to us — it is a recognition demanded and earned through struggle. Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926 because he understood that if you don't control your own narrative, someone else will control it for you — and they will get it wrong, or worse, erase it entirely. He said: "If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated." That warning still echoes.

Think about what Black people have given this world: The blues. Jazz. Rock and roll. Hip-hop. R&B. Gospel. The Harlem Renaissance. The Civil Rights Movement. The science of Charles Drew and Mae Jemison. The literature of Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. The philosophy of W.E.B. Du Bois and bell hooks. The resistance of Nat Turner, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Ida B. Wells. The art of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kerry James Marshall. The athletes — Muhammad Ali, Wilma Rudolph, Serena Williams — who didn't just compete, they transformed what was possible. This is not a footnote to history. This IS history.

So when I come to RP here, when I write characters and stories, I carry all of that with me. My characters aren't just names on a screen. They have weight. They have lineage. They come from somewhere real. They love hard, hurt deep, fight for things that matter, and they find beauty in the spaces where others only see struggle. That's the Nujabes influence — finding the melody in the madness. That's the hood influence — knowing that community is everything even when systems try to strip it from you.
