Her love came at you like a blessing and usurped your body and soul like a curse. Whatever life you lived beforehand no longer mattered. Carter was’t made for soft kisses on the forehead and hugs, no, her defiance of rules, her refusal to feel and connect were bred into her - by the same people that abandoned her as a child.

Her entire childhood was spend switching from foster family to foster family, never staying in one home for longer than two months - no cage strong enough to hold her, no family loving enough to heal her.

Carter’s every single mistake, no matter the significance, was met with cruel punishment. Verbal and , brought onto her by the frustrated orphanage workers, were meant to shape her into a disciplined child worthy of adoption. But it only taught her how to resist harder.
