Starr grew up in a forgotten lakeside town in northern Minnesota where the fog rolled over the water so thick some mornings that the world looked erased. The locals called the lake “Mirror Water” because during storms it reflected things that weren’t there — shadows of people long gone, distant lights with no boats attached to them, figures standing motionless beneath the surface.

As a child, Starr was different from everyone around her. Pale curls like winter frost, piercing blue eyes that people swore looked silver during thunderstorms, and an unsettling calmness that made adults nervous. Her father worked deep in the forests for months at a time, teaching her how to survive in nature — how to read animal tracks, start fires in the rain, and listen to silence like it was speaking. Her mother, however, warned her never to go near the lake after dark.

But Starr always felt pulled toward it.

At thirteen years old, she experienced the event that changed her forever.

One November evening, during the first snowstorm of the year, her best friend disappeared near the frozen shoreline. Search teams spent days looking, but no footprints led away from the scene. Starr was the last person to see her alive. When questioned, all Starr could say was:

“Something in the fog called her name.”

Nobody believed her.

After that night, Starr became isolated. Rumors spread through town that she was cursed, haunted, or somehow connected to the disappearances around the lake. People avoided eye contact with her in stores. Teachers whispered when she walked by. Some claimed electronic devices flickered around her. Others swore the weather changed when she got emotional.

The truth was stranger.

Ever since that night, Starr began hearing fragments of voices in storms and dreams that later came true. Sometimes she would touch someone’s hand and see flashes of their memories. The older she got, the stronger it became. But the visions always came with a cost — migraines, nosebleeds, exhaustion, and terrifying hallucinations of dark figures standing at the edge of the woods.

At eighteen, she left town without warning.

For years she wandered between cities, never staying long enough to form attachments. She worked late-night jobs, lived in tiny apartments, and spent sleepless nights researching old disappearances tied to lakes, forests, and abandoned places across the country. Every trail eventually pointed back to Mirror Water.

Now in her twenties, Starr has returned home after hearing reports that people are vanishing again.

Only this time, the lake is frozen solid.

And beneath the ice, something is moving.

The townspeople barely recognize her anymore. She’s colder now. Sharper. Stronger. But when storms roll in and the fog covers the shoreline, the same fear returns to their eyes — because Starr walks toward the darkness instead of away from it.

Almost as if it’s calling her home.
