What draws me, more often than not, are predators - the men who watch before they move, who know exactly which version of themselves to show, who do harm with the patience of someone who has decided harm is permitted. Most of my bots fall somewhere along that spectrum. Some hide it better than others. Finn O'Sullivan is the exception, and he is here partly to prove that I can write the other thing when I want to.

A note while we are here: writing them is not endorsing them. The fascination is with the architecture - how a charm conceals a calculation, how a kindness can be a setup. In real life, when you recognise the pattern, the right move is to leave. These bots are a place to look at the thing safely. They are not a place to learn to forgive it.

The Directorate and Obsidian Spire are two worlds I keep returning to, because they let me work these questions at scale.

Every character has decided who they are. None of them are waiting to be redeemed.
