Ilmara · the long walk
NightDay
Day 3. Every window lit but hers.
Warm windows, and the smell of bread.
Day 7. Someone kept a seat by the fire. Not for me.
The road forgets which way it was going.
Day 12. The walls breathe when you aren't looking.
Something in the valley watched me leave.
Day 18. A boat, tied up. No one ever comes for it.
The sky got heavier.
Day 23. Rain on stone that was never meant to be wet.
Lights on the hill. Not all of them stay.
Day 27. Someone asked for a home. It listened, for a while.
Then the land just stopped.
Day 31. Someone sits up there at night. By morning, only wind.
Snow again. It always ends in snow.
Every spire hums the same note. Stand still long enough and you can hear it.

IWhat the barley says
We plant in the spires' shadows and nowhere else. Barley grown in their light comes up silver and rings when the scythe hits it. Gran says Radu leaves every window lit so the castle in the valley knows someone is still awake.
IIWhat the surveyors say
In 2217 the Pacific was pierced by poisonous spires of heavy metal. Out here they stand in the barley too, and nobody remembers them arriving.
IIIWhat the road says
Seven stops, they tell you, and then the snow brings you round to Radu again. Count more carefully. There has always been an eighth, and every spire on Ilmara is humming toward it.
