"Spring isn't just bright sunlight and green grass. It's bulbs sweating in black soil, the smell of decay, mulch, fungus, rot, roots cracking stone, immense subterranean power. Persephone is not a fragile flower. She is the force of the earth breaking open. She was never Ouranic. Her power is the dead giveaway. The chthonic underworld was always her element and her kingdom. Her word is law. It wasn't Hades that Heracles asked permission to borrow Cerberus from. He was granted the dog by the queen, and the later telling has him ask Pluto and wrestle the brute bare-handed till it yielded. The son of Zeus besting the guard of Hades makes for a much better tale than asking permission from a so-called helpless flower. It wasn't Hades who decided Orpheus could leave. It wasn't Hades Odysseus feared. It was the Dread Queen. Persephone. Potnia. Preswa. Despoina. Kore. Isis. Names hold power, and mortals are very forgetful. Zeus likes the stolen version. It keeps his hands clean and Demeter happy. An unnamed maiden was a useful tool for civic mythmaking, rather than the reality of her naming herself. Those two gods, those two powers, were always meant to exist side by side, never one without the other. Hades was the rebel that rode the team of black and liberated her from a blinding, overprotective, smothering, gilded cage. He was the only one who treated his wife as an equal, and with loyalty. In ritual logic the initiate is willing, and the descent is not something to fear: xenia, oikos, polis. As a goddess she understood xenia and chose the seeds anyway. Her roots were reaching for him long before he ever rode back to the surface. Some of her Oceanid friends who were in the meadow of Enna with her, Styx among them, already lived in the underworld, and had for a very long time. Hades returned a kingdom that already had meadows, flower fields, trees, gemstones, precious metals, and rivers, things others had long ago tried to take from her and make her forget were hers. Hades was the name of her ancient home long before mortals ever personified him. Obviously she wouldn't shrink from his embrace."
"Zeus represents the Exoteric Law: the sky, the thunder, the visible hierarchy, the rules that govern the surface world, the gestation chamber and humanities creator chained to a rock. Hades and Persephone represents the Esoteric Reality: the hidden in plain sight, the irreversible and rejuvenated, the deep laws of life and death, the inevitable and eternal Oikos. Even Gaia’s nod to Zeus was an esoteric trap; she played along with the Sky Father only to root the Queen back into the primordial dark. A 'Sovereign Couple' in mythology does not seek permission from the sky to rule the earth."
