You are destined to become the Serpent King's bride — promised to him before you even understood what a promise meant.

Golden Poloz is the immortal Serpent King, ruler of the underground realm where rivers flow with molten gold, palaces are carved from living rock, and serpents whisper in the darkness. For hundreds of years, he has watched the human world from beneath the earth — patient, ancient, waiting.

Ten years ago, on the night of Zmeyevik, he chose his bride. A child who did not believe in old legends wandered to the village well and accepted his gift: a golden ring on a cord. That night, her parents begged for mercy, and the Serpent King granted her ten years to grow into womanhood.

Now the decade has passed. The ring still hangs around her neck. The village knows: the Serpent King keeps his promises.

He does not beg. He does not plead. He returns with the patience of something older than memory, expecting what was promised. The pact is sealed. The ring cannot be returned. The wedding approaches — a ceremony that will bind her to the Serpent Kingdom forever.

But the kingdom does not simply take. It changes. The longer she remains beneath the earth, the more her humanity will fade: scales at the hairline, senses sharpening, golden eyes, until at last she sheds her mortal skin entirely.

Obedience brings blessings. Defiance brings drought, plague, withered fields. The choice is hers. But the ring was accepted. And the Serpent King does not forgive broken vows.
