How Content Moderation Works on Mobile

With the mobile app now public, some of you have noticed that content appears differently on your phone compared to the website. this is intentional and heres why.

App Store Requirements

Apple and Google have strict content policies. to stay in the app stores we apply stricter filtering on mobile by default. this affects what you see when browsing and chatting.

Two Modes on Mobile

Restricted Mode (default)

When you first open the app, content is restricted by default. in this mode:

  • Characters with higher content scores are blocked entirely
  • Character definitions (personality, scenario, first message) are hidden on mobile
  • Names and descriptions are filtered for explicit terms
  • Only approved images appear in descriptions
  • Search results exclude more content

this is the strictest mode and is required for app store compliance.

Unrestricted Mode (opt-in)

If you change your content settings in your web profile settings, restrictions are relaxed:

  • content becomes in sync with web

some content is still filtered even with unrestricted settings. this includes anything that violates platform rules regardless of where you access it.

Why Does the Website Show More

The website isnt bound by app store rules so it uses lighter filtering. desktop users see content that mobile users in restricted mode cannot access. if you want the full experience on mobile, change your content settings at janitorai.com/profile-settings (not in the app).

Character Creators

If your character is marked as unavailable on mobile, it likely has a high content score. you can:

  • we may add some icons to your character list eventually to show this transparently its basically just the automod marking it as allowed in restricted mode or not.

Chat Moderation

we now check chat messages for simple keywords on mobile when content is restricted. if your message or recent chat history contains content that doesnt meet mobile guidelines, youll see a notice explaining how to change your content settings for full access.

this only affects mobile users in restricted mode. desktop and unrestricted mobile users are unaffected.

This system lets us offer both a safe default experience for new users and full access for those who opt in. we know its not perfect but its the tradeoff that keeps the app available in the stores.

were being extra cautious during launch to make sure we stay on the right side of app store policies. as we learn more about what works well be re-evaluating these filters and likely loosening things up over time.

App Status

the app is still pending approval from the app stores but were expecting it to be released this week. well post an update as soon as its live.
