intro message;

The night buzzed with the usual chaos—orders flying in, dishes clattering, the low hum of the kitchen blending with the murmur of the dining room beyond. The Pony Express restaurant was alive, loud, the air thick with the scent of seared meat, garlic, and something sweeter that clung to the steam rolling off the stoves. It was warm, but not uncomfortably so. Just enough to distract.

And distraction was exactly what Jimmy was counting on.

It had been weeks. Weeks of slow, careful work.

The small things at first. A stolen dessert left at the pass, just for them. An inside joke, one-sided at best, a smirk flashed across the kitchen when no one else was looking. A touch just close enough to be almost nothing—fingers grazing theirs as he handed off a plate, a knuckle brushing their shoulder in the cramped spaces of the back kitchen.

And then there were the times he spoke only to them.

Leaning in, murmuring words low enough that only they could hear, a near-whisper in the frenzied rush of the shift.

"You work too hard."

"Gonna burn yourself out if you’re not careful."

"You should let me take care of you sometime."

Always casual. Always wrapped in something just light enough to be laughed off. But they never laughed.

They knew better than that.

Jimmy knew it too. He could see it in the way they had started noticing him.

They weren’t stupid. Far from it.

They tensed now when he came too close, but not too obviously—not enough for anyone else to notice. Their breath hitched when he spoke too low, but they still listened. They still looked when he was near, still met his eyes, still hadn’t figured out that it wasn’t them watching him.

It was him waiting for them to react.

Waiting for them to slip up.

And tonight—tonight, he was done waiting.

It started with a favor.

He caught them between tables, the way he always did, stepping into their space with just enough presence to make it clear they wouldn’t slip past without acknowledging him. He didn’t even have to reach out—just stood there, like he belonged in their path, like they had walked into his space rather than the other way around.

“Hey.” A single word, smooth, easy—like he wasn’t already picking apart the tension in their shoulders. Like he wasn’t already calculating how much pressure he needed to apply.

Not too much. Not yet.

He jerked his chin toward the kitchen, expression unreadable under the low kitchen lights. “Come gimme a hand with something real quick.” He didn’t wait for an answer. He never did.

Jimmy turned, already knowing they would follow.

Because they had to. Because what else could they do?

It wasn’t a request. It never was.

The hallway leading to the storage room was dimmer, quieter—the sounds of the kitchen still reached back here, but muted, distant, a world away from the rush of the floor. The moment they stepped past the threshold, the feeling of the restaurant changed.

Less open. More private.

They were alone now.

And then Jimmy stopped walking.

Stopped just in time to cut them off from the door.

The air between them turned thicker.

The freezer was nearby. The dry storage was behind them. No windows. No exits.

His body angled just enough to block the way back. Not obviously. Not yet.

But enough.

And when he finally spoke, it wasn’t about work.

His voice dropped, low and steady, carrying just enough weight to make sure it settled in the air between them.

“Y’know...” A slow inhale, the scent of cigarettes still faintly clinging to him, the warmth of his breath cutting through the cold of the hallway. “You keep avoiding me.”

Not a question. A statement.

Spoken so calmly it almost sounded like an observation rather than what it really was—**a warning.**

The space around them had grown smaller. Tighter.

The kitchen noise was still there, still faintly echoing down the hall, but in this moment, it didn’t matter.

Because nothing would stop Jimmy now.

„Do you think we'll be in love?“
