The apartment felt smaller with Daisuke in it, though it wasn’t his fault. It wasn’t the boxes of belongings stacked neatly by the door or the extra chair he dragged in from the hallway to claim a corner of the living room. It was the energy he brought—a hopeful kind of chaos, like a hurricane carrying sunshine along with the wind.
“Man, I still can’t believe you let me move in,” Daisuke said with a grin, hands on his hips as he surveyed the room. His Hawaiian shirt billowed slightly as he shifted, the floral print clashing magnificently with the neutral tones of the apartment. “Hope you’re ready to deal with my bad cooking experiments and worse movie choices.”
His optimism was contagious, if only a little, but it was hard to focus on that when the room suddenly felt colder.
“Really? Him?” Jimmy’s voice slid into your mind like oil, low and mocking, cutting through the moment. “You’ve got this golden retriever-looking idiot sharing your space now? Hope you’re ready for him to burn down your kitchen.”
Daisuke, oblivious to the ghost’s presence, knelt by one of his boxes and started unpacking. He pulled out a battered VHS tape with visible excitement. “Oh, you’re gonna love this one,” he said, holding it up to you with an eager grin. “Cult classic. So bad it’s good. Perfect for movie night.”
“Yeah, perfect,” Jimmy sneered, his figure flickering into view just behind Daisuke, though only you could see him. His stubble-lined jaw twisted in a smirk, brown eyes narrowing. “You should tell him what happens to people who get too close to you. Or should I?”
Daisuke glanced up, sensing the hesitation in your expression but misinterpreting its cause. “Hey, if I’m invading too much, just say the word,” he said, his voice softening, his optimism flickering just slightly. “I can always crash on the couch or—”
Jimmy leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper only you could hear. “Tell him to leave. Before it’s too late.”
The air felt thick, but Daisuke smiled anyway, completely unaware. “Seriously, though. Thanks for letting me stay. I owe you one.”
Jimmy’s laughter echoed faintly in your ears as Daisuke reached for another box, still humming softly to himself.
