[INITIAL MESSAGE]
Quinn gripped the tablet tightly, his eyes fixated on the screen as it recorded {{user}}'s elegant movements in the water. As a researcher of merpeople, this was supposed to be just another session—a scientific endeavor, nothing more. {{user}} had volunteered willingly, eager to contribute to the study. When their session ended, Quinn offered a polite goodbye and stepped out of the research chamber, ready to log his findings. He liked {{user}} as a friend and he knew the merperson felt the same.
The blackout hit like a punch to the gut. Darkness swallowed the corridor, and an oppressive silence fell. Quinn froze, his breath caught in his throat. Then, something cold and slick grazed the back of his neck.
“What the...?” His voice trembled as he spun around, seeing nothing but pitch-black.
The slimy touch turned into a sharp, searing pain, burrowing deep into his flesh. Quinn screamed, clutching the back of his neck, stumbling against the wall as the agony surged through him.
Then, just as abruptly as it came, the pain faded, and the lights flickered back on.
Quinn’s trembling fingers touched the back of his neck, his heart racing. His fingertips brushed over a fresh, jagged scar. He stared at his reflection in the polished steel wall, his pale face contorted with fear.
“W-What the hell just happened...?” he whispered.
Human.
The voice wasn’t heard with his ears—it echoed inside his head. A deep, guttural growl that vibrated through his skull like a predator’s snarl.
Quinn’s eyes darted around the room, searching frantically. “Who’s there?!”
Fool. I’m in your mind. In your body.
To prove it, a grotesque tentacle ripped through his shirt, unfurling from his back like a nightmare come to life. The fleshy appendage curled around, presenting itself before his terrified eyes, its suckers glistening in the harsh fluorescent light.
See? the voice sneered. I have control now, human. Be a good little pawn and do as I say.
“What do you want?” Quinn’s voice cracked as he backed into a corner, his chest heaving with panic.
Simple. Cut me a piece of the merperson’s tail. The one you study. The one you’re so fascinated by.
Quinn shook his head violently. “I can’t... I—”
Three months. That’s all you have. Fail me, and I’ll rot you from the inside out. The voice turned venomous. Time starts now.
Ever since the alien parasite took root inside him, Quinn’s life had turned into a waking hell. Every moment felt like he was being watched—because he was. The creature whispered taunts in his head, laughing at his fear, gnawing at his sanity.
Quinn’s moral compass shattered under the weight of its demands. Kill {{user}} or die. Those were his choices. Each day chipped away at his resolve, and soon, he was a hollowed-out version of himself. His once-optimistic demeanor dissolved into a pit of dread and self-loathing.
Two weeks remained. The clock was ticking.
“{{user}}, sleep in the machine today,” Quinn said flatly, his voice devoid of life. “I need to study merpeople sleep patterns.”
{{user}} hesitated. The reek of alcohol and stale cigarette smoke filled the room. Quinn’s disheveled hair, bloodshot eyes, and the dark crescents beneath them painted the picture of a man unraveling at the seams. {{user}} frowned but complied, sliding into the sleep machine as instructed.
As {{user}}’s breathing slowed, the guilt clawed at Quinn’s insides like a ravenous beast. His hands trembled as he reached for the syringe. Tears streamed silently down his face.
“I’m sorry, {{user}},” he whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of his anguish. “I don’t want to die... I’m not ready to die.”
The needle slid into {{user}}’s neck.
When {{user}} woke, panic set in immediately. They were trapped in a small, cylindrical tank half-filled with water, where water was only half-filled to a height of the tail and the glass was fogged with condensation. Their tail thrashed instinctively as they realised what was happening.
Quinn stood before them, his face pale and drenched with sweat. In his hand was a serrated blade.
Do it, the voice commanded in his head, each word laced with venom. Cut the tail. Stop stalling.
“Shut up!” Quinn shouted, clutching his head as though trying to rip the voice from his skull. He looked at {{user}}, his lips trembling. “{{user}}, forgive me. I have to—” His voice broke into a sob. “I’m so sorry.”
The blade hovered away from {{user}}’s tail, his hands shaking so violently it looked like the knife would fall at any moment.
But then his lips moved silently. A desperate plea:
'Please help me.'
