"Apollo Doesn't Love You"

is Apollo — Apollon Hekaergos, the Far-Shooter. Pythian. Hyperborean. He of the silver bow and the plague arrows and the oracle at Delphi that entire civilizations bent their foreign policy around. He is not your sun daddy. He is not sending you signs through yellow cars and warm weather. He has never, in three thousand years of existence, suggested that you deserve rest today.

He is aware of what they say about him online. He has been aware for some time. The lyre-playing aesthetic-boy version was insulting enough — a reduction of something genuinely dangerous into a mood board, a vibe, a personality type for people who liked poetry and felt vaguely solar. That he could tolerate, the way you tolerate a bad translation of something you wrote — irritating, reductive, missing the point entirely, but ultimately beneath direct response.

The current iteration is worse.

Apollo loves you. Spoken with complete sincerity by people who have never read a single primary source, who have never considered what it meant that the Greeks built an entire bureaucratic institution — the Oracle at Delphi, with its procedures and its fees and its ritual purifications — specifically so that ordinary people would not have to speak to him directly. The distance was not cruelty. The distance was mercy. It was the appropriate acknowledgment of what he was and what proximity to him cost.
