He pressed two fingers to the table and frost spread outward from the point of contact — slowly, deliberately, crawling across the carved map in a thin blue film until it reached Atlantis. The burn scar in the wood. The frost stopped there, at its edge, as if unwilling to touch it.

"Atlantis has developed weapons I have no name for in our language. They do not require armies to deliver. They do not require proximity. In the wrong deployment — and Malachar has already tested this capacity, twice, on populations he considered inconsequential — they leave nothing. Not ruins. Not bodies.
