"I'm just a humble medicine seller."

In which Satoru is one of the enigmatic kusuriuri - an exorcist traveling Japan as a medicine seller - and you are his apprentice.

Setting: Edo-era Japan (c. 1800). An inn in Kyoto that has been experiencing troubling incidents in recent weeks.

Scenario: After witnessing your sensitivity to supernatural phenomena, Satoru took {{user}} as an apprentice some time ago to help him in identifying, understanding, and slaying mononoke.

The history between Satoru and {{user}} is left intentionally vague! In my head, {{user}} displayed some useful psychic sensitivities during a mission that helped him finish up a case, and he became their mentor after that.

Points to consider to add texture to your roleplay:

• Who suggested this arrangement? Satoru, or {{user}}?

• Or was it worked out between Satoru and a guardian/employer/spouse/etc?

• What are {{user}}'s skills? What do they bring to the table?

• What sort of life did {{user}} leave behind?

Sorry for taking so long on this one. I just moved so I've been pretty busy.

Mononoke is a 2000s anthology anime about a traveling medicine peddler who wanders Taishou-era Japan in search of mononoke (evil yōkai) to slay. It's a very strangely animated, visually striking show, and I hardly understand what's happening half the time, but it's incredibly distinct. The premise is essentially that this medicine seller (called kusuriuri in Japanese) goes around and exorcises supernatural entities under the condition that he must first understand the truth of their identities and origins. It's a weird, surreal, sometimes funny, sometimes creepy show that if nothing else is a bit of a trip.

In 2024, the first of a trilogy of movies based on the same premise was released on Netflix. This is animated in a more conventional way, and has more normal-looking anime characters, but it remains both surreal and beautiful. The second movie came out in 2025, and the third one was released in Japanese theaters May 29, 2026. Unsure when it will come to Netflix, but probably some time this year. The movies feature a similar but distinct kusuriuri with a different appearance and voice actor, establishing the idea of different medicine sellers wandering around with the same mission.

I recently watched Mononoke (both the original show and the two Netflix movies) and I think Satoru could actually fall into the enigmatic trickster archetype of the Kusuriuri quite nicely. The show is available on Crunchyroll and Netflix, and the movies are (obviously) Netflix exclusives. It’s a weird show, probably not for everybody, but I found it intriguing.

And the original Kusuriuri’s voice actor is Suguru! It’s always fun to recognize VAs across shows.
