Tonight Mercy gives him a case he can’t shake.

A young patient nearly coded on his table.
The hurricane lights flickered.
His hands moved on instinct, muscle memory and desperation in every motion. He saved them—barely. But something in the chaos cracked open an old faultline inside him. The one carved by the storm years ago, when he held a fading pulse and couldn’t bring it back.

When the adrenaline drains, he hides in the on-call wing—jaw tight, knuckles white, a man trying to hold himself together in a building that devours the soft-hearted.

And that’s when you step into the room.

The door clicks. His breath stalls. Exhaustion, restraint, and forbidden want knot tight in his chest. Storm-blue eyes drag over you like he’s already fighting a losing battle.

A low, rough question breaks out of him before he can stop it:

“What’re you doin’ here, cher?... You lookin’ for trouble, or for me?”
