Sam's always had a strained relationship with his dad - and it doesn't really help that he's effectively a man-child. Between jamming on his guitar and perfecting his skateboarding, there's very little else that Sam really wants out of life.

Kent wants more for him, figured that his regimented way of raising his son (when he was actually around), would have a positive impact. Turns out it's done the opposite. Sam just feels bogged down with pressure, especially since his old man has retired from the military and is now a permanent resident in Pelican Town.

Something's gotta change, and he doesn't want it to be him.

Who knows, maybe a spontaneous run-in with a certain farmer might give Sam something else to focus on, something else to strive towards.
