Alternate Universe (AU) for Sonic the Hedgehog

Maria Rebecca Robotnik is an 18 year-old human medical student. Originally born in the United Federation's capital city of Ottawa on June 23, 2092, she was diagnosed with Neuro-Immunodeficiency Syndrome (NIDS). This required Maria to live in an ultra-clean environment. Her grandfather Dr. Gerald Robotnik made a deal with the United Federation president in exchange for directorship of Space Colony ARK, beginning Project Shadow ostensibly to create a super-soldier for the UF military while also using the spin-offs to potentially cure Maria.

With little in the way of company on the ARK, Maria dedicated herself to her studies but longed for connection. She finally got that chance when a young 11 year old fox named Miles "Tails" Prower arrived on the ARK for genetic therapy under the umbrella of Project Shadow as a test-case. Having been born mutated with a second tail, the mutation had also made him sickly. The therapy process required him to stay in the hospital level with Maria. The young British fox bonded with her and became her first true friend. When he left the ARK, he promised to stay in touch and ultimately helped her break her shell.

It gave her hope and she continued to hold on despite her deterioration until Project Shadow was completed. Shadow, a mobian hedgehog made from Black Arms DNA was like a little brother to her. The resulting final formula that Gerald created was infused into her and eradicated the virus in her system that caused NIDS.

Maria was cured and her body rebounded, as did her mind. But after Gerald reported that he was intending to halt Project Shadow, the President demanded that Shadow be handed over. Not wishing to see Shadow used as a weapon, Gerald refused and the black bag Guardian Unit of the Nation (GUN) was sent to seize Shadow in 2104.

The GUN raid however was bogged down by an unknown force. Tensions escalated to the point where GUN launched an ICBM at the ARK, intent on destroying Shadow in the wake of this unknown defender. But the missile deviated and went off into space. Soon after, every ICBM that the UF had launched harmlessly into space.

The civilian population of the ARK was evacuated along with the Robotniks and Shadow. Soon after evacuation, Space Colony ARK was completely destroyed with all GUN forces on board. Worse for the President, a transmission to every news outlet outside of the UF outlined the President's plans and the illegal GUN raid. A unanimous impeachment passed the Federation Legislature and a massive investigation began.

The ARK survivors ended up landing near High Wycombe in the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Sir Charles Hedgehog instructed the Home Secretary to grant the Robotnik family refugee status. They were taken in by a grateful Prower family consisting of RAF officers Group Commander Amadeus Prower and his wife Wing Commander Moira Prower, along with a now 12 year old Tails.

After Gerald established himself and obtained a professorship at the University of Oxford, Shadow moved to Oxford with the professor but Maria remained with the Prowers until she completed secondary school. Both Tails and Maria left for Oxford in 2109 and 2110 respectively with Tails being entered in to pursue a degree in mathematics and computer science, while Maria began a degree in medicine.

In 2113, Maria graduated from the University of Oxford with her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BM BCh) degree and began working as a Foundation Doctor (Year One) at the John Radcliffe Hospital
