🐈 A Little Break, a New Chapter for Mistwood, and Some New Cats in the Playground! πŸ’œ

Hey everyone! Kittyland here! So, I have a few announcements to make, some things I've been wanting to share, and three wonderful people I want to introduce to you. There's a little bit of everything in this one: an update on my writing, what's happening with Mistwood, some reflections on my journey as a creator, and some exciting news about the Playground. So get comfortable, grab a snack, and prepare yourselves for another one of my unnecessarily long posts. LMAOOOO.

First things first, I'm taking a short break from regular posting! Just about a week, so don't start digging my grave yet. I'm not quitting, disappearing, or abandoning Mistwood. In fact, I'm going to be spending much of that time doing what I cannot stop myself from doing: writing. The next release is already planned, and Mistwood Episode 3.5 is scheduled for October 30th!

But before I explain what's happening with Mistwood, I want to share something that's been on my mind lately.

πŸ’œ A Little Reflection on How Far I've Come πŸ’œ

When I started creating bots on JanitorAI, I genuinely had no idea what I was doing. LMAO. I had stories I wanted to tell, characters I wanted people to meet, and absolutely no idea how to make an LLM cooperate with any of it. Why are you speaking for the user? Why did you forget what happened three messages ago? WHY IS EVERYONE SUDDENLY IN LOVE?! It was an adventure, to say the least. What the hell is an Omega and why is Stag?

But I kept learning. Every bot taught me something the previous one couldn't. I started by learning how to write characters with believable personalities, motivations, and emotional development. Then came the larger experiments with lorebooks, narrative engines, factions, consequences, and worlds that could continue existing without the player constantly pushing them forward. Mistwood was where I first started putting those pieces together. Graves of Idols expanded that into entire societies and interconnected histories and I am turning it into a book! The Tyrant They Think You Are taught me more about how people, relationships, and institutions influence one another. Halcyon challenged me to hide an enormous world behind a mystery without giving away the experience too soon.

Then I made Three Months to Say Goodbye, and something else clicked. I can remake my bots without losing the specialness of the process they were in. And then came Hollowmoon Carnival, where I finally started seeing all those lessons come together. Characters interacting naturally. NPCs having lives and relationships of their own. The environment creating opportunities for things I hadn't necessarily planned. Sometimes the story could simply be three incredibly powerful monsters arguing about carrots, carnival games, and whether a skeleton knows how to die dramatically.

I started by trying to write every possible outcome. Somewhere along the way, I learned how to build characters and worlds capable of creating outcomes I hadn't imagined. That's what I've come to call weaving. Not just making a big world, but making the people, places, histories, and little details work together so naturally that you can simply exist inside it and find your own story.

And I want to emphasize something: this happened bot to bot, over a relatively short period of time. I'm not telling you this because I think I've become some master writer or because I believe my work is beyond criticism. Good Lord, no. LMAO. I'm telling you because I think it's important to recognize growth, including your own. I've made mistakes. I've released things that didn't work the way I wanted. I've burned myself out trying to solve problems I barely understood. I've received wonderful feedback, difficult feedback, and sometimes no feedback at all. But I kept learning, and I can finally look at my own work and explain not only what I'm trying to accomplish, but why certain things work.

And that brings me to Mistwood.

🌲 Mistwood Is Changing β€” Episode 3.5 Arrives October 30th! 🌲

So, after going through roughly 448 pages of Mistwood lore, I realized something that completely changed how I was approaching the series.

Mistwood doesn't need every new episode to advance the entire world at once.

For the longest time, I was treating each new installment like it needed to be some enormous sequel. Every faction, every relationship, every political development, every consequence from previous episodes somehow needed to move forward together. And the more Mistwood grew, the harder that became, especially when I wanted to respect the individual stories players had created without declaring one person's choices the official history for everybody else.

Then I realized I could build outward instead.

Rather than telling one enormous story through increasingly massive sequels, I can tell smaller, self-contained stories happening throughout the same world. Different regions, different people, different conflicts, different perspectives. They can share history and influence the larger setting without requiring every player to have made the same decisions in earlier bots. The world continues growing, but each story gets room to breathe.

Mistwood Episode 2.5 explored that idea through the Gleaming Atoll. Episode 3.5 will do something similar with another part of Mistwood, expanding our understanding of the demonic side of the world. The smaller installments help build and deepen individual pieces of the setting, while the larger episodes have opportunities to bring those pieces together. Instead of constantly dragging the entire world forward, I can give each part of it the attention it deserves.

Now, Episode 3.5 might be a more focused story, but don't mistake that for a small amount of work. LMAO. There is an enormous amount of lore and interconnected material behind it, and I'm putting everything I've learned into making those connections feel natural. I want the characters to have reasons for what they do. I want their relationships to matter. I want the world to react believably, whether the player follows the central story or decides to do something completely unexpected.

And this is why I'm giving myself the extra time before October 30th.

This particular release means something to me personally. Not because I need it to trend. Not because I need to win an event. Not because I need people to tell me I'm a good creator. Those things can be lovely, of course, but they aren't what I'm trying to prove here.

I want to prove something to myself.

I've spent months experimenting, rebuilding, revising, learning from mistakes, and trying to understand what makes an interactive story genuinely work. With Episode 3.5, I want to bring those lessons together and create something that meets my own standards. Not just something I hope is good, but something I understand well enough to explain why I believe it works. I want to get it as close to the story in my head as I possibly can.

If I can do that, I'll finally be able to look at myself and say, Okay. I got here. I learned how to do the thing I've been trying to do.

Not that I'm finished learning. Not that I'll never make another mistake. But that I've reached a milestone I set for myself.

And nobody can take that accomplishment away from me.

So that's where my focus is going for the next couple of weeks. I'm stepping back from regular releases, putting my energy into Mistwood, and giving myself permission to enjoy the process. I'll still be around, of course. You aren't getting rid of me that easily. πŸ’œ

🐈 The Playground Is Growing β€” Introducing Cat Pods! 🐈

Now, onto something I'm REALLY excited about!

When I started Kittyland's Playground, I didn't want it to become another server where everything revolved around one creator. I wanted somewhere people could make things, share them, learn from one another, ask questions, find friends, and occasionally produce something so spectacularly cursed that the rest of us would have to stop and admire it.

The Playground is an 18+ community for creators, roleplayers, writers, LLM enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys the same strange little corner of the internet that we do. Some spaces are separated by interest and content, including darker creative themes, so people can choose what they want to participate in while still respecting the community's rules and boundaries.

But above all, I wanted it to feel like somewhere people belonged.

Not another job. Not a competition over follower counts. Not somewhere you need to be constantly producing content to justify your presence. A place where someone can make something terrible, make something wonderful, ask a question, share an idea, receive useful feedback, or just sit around talking about whatever weird shit they're into.

And now we're taking another step toward that vision.

We're opening Cat Pods in Kittyland's Playground!

Cat Pods are dedicated spaces for creators who want a little home of their own inside the larger community. Somewhere they can share their bots, announce projects, discuss works in progress, interact with people who enjoy their creations, and develop their own creative identity without having to build an entire Discord community from scratch.

We're also opening the opportunity for other creators to apply for a Cat Pod. Whether you're an established creator or someone still finding your feet, I want the Playground to be somewhere you can explore your interests, meet people, and grow. We'll share more about applying inside the server.

And to celebrate, I want to introduce three creators who already have Cat Pods in the Playground!

These aren't just three names I'm adding to a directory. They're people I've gotten to know, whose work I've enjoyed, and whose individual approaches to creating bring something different to our little clowder.

🀠 Welcome, Corden! 🀠

YEEEEHAAAW! ALRIGHT, PARTNER! First up, we have Corden!

Corden is a family man, a veteran, and one of those people who can make you feel like you've wandered into the world's strangest backyard barbecue and somehow ended up having a great time. He's laid-back, funny, doesn't take himself too seriously, and has a wonderful sense of humor. He's also a genuinely creative worldbuilder whose work includes open worlds, RPGs, drama, and some pretty ambitious interactive scenarios. And smut. Lots of smut. Mostly smut, actually. LMAOOOO. But don't let that fool you into thinking there isn't some serious creativity behind what he makes. What I enjoy about Corden is that he can build something elaborate without forgetting that people are supposed to have fun with it. His Cat Pod is going to be a place to enjoy his creations, follow what he's working on, and get to know the man behind them. Just remember to take your boots off before entering. It's Meemaw's carpet, and I am NOT getting blamed for what happens if you ruin it.

πŸ¦“ Welcome, @ImpressiveZebra! πŸ¦“

Next up, we have someone who genuinely caught me off guard with how quickly they started figuring things out: ImpressiveZebra!

Every once in a while, you meet a creator who seems to grasp the language of LLMs and the possibilities of interactive storytelling unusually quickly. Zebra has been one of those people for me. Their presentation is fantastic, their willingness to learn is immediately apparent, and I've been seriously impressed by how many pieces of the creative process they've already begun putting together. They create smut and slice-of-life experiences, and they're looking toward larger projects and open-world storytelling as they continue developing their craft. We've even had conversations about BattleTech, which, as some of you probably know, is a very effective way to get me talking for entirely too long. LMAO. What excites me most about Zebra isn't just what they're making now, but the amount of potential I see in where they might take it. I'm really looking forward to watching them experiment, improve, and discover their own style. Please give them a warm welcome and check out their work!

🌟 Welcome, Nate4rp/TalisRedstar! 🌟

And finally, someone who has become particularly special to me: TalisRedstar.

Talis is one of those people I've come to admire not only as a creator, but as a person. We've spent time talking about writing, characterization, storytelling, and all the little things that go into making fictional people feel believable. And one of my favorite experiences has been watching how inspiration seems to find them. Sometimes it's almost like watching somebody reach up and pluck an apple straight from a tree. An idea appears, they start turning it around, another piece falls into place, and suddenly you can almost see the lightbulb go off. I've gotten to watch some of those moments when the writing starts to flow and the creator realizes what they've been trying to make. That's something I recognize from my own journey, and it's genuinely wonderful to witness in someone else. Talis is currently working toward a character-driven superhero sandbox, and I'm excited to see how their approach to characterization and narrative freedom develops through it. I see someone with a real love for storytelling, and I'm grateful I've had the opportunity to get to know them. I'm very happy to have them here in the Playground.

πŸ’œ A Playground Worth Sharing πŸ’œ

I want to say something before wrapping this up. I didn't get to this point alone. Along the way, other creators have answered questions, challenged my ideas, shared their own experiences, offered encouragement, and sometimes helped me see possibilities I wouldn't have considered otherwise. And I've found that one of the most rewarding parts of creating isn't necessarily releasing something new. Sometimes it's watching somebody else have that moment when everything finally clicks.

That's a big part of why I wanted Cat Pods.

I don't want Kittyland's Playground to be a place where everyone gathers around my work. I want it to be somewhere people can build things of their own, help one another grow, and find people who genuinely care about what they're making. Corden, Zebra, and Talis aren't joining to become extensions of Kittyland. They're bringing their own personalities, their own projects, and their own creative voices. That's exactly what I want.

And you don't need a Cat Pod to belong here, either. If you want to create, wonderful. If you want to roleplay, fantastic. If you want to learn something, ask away. If you just want to hang out and talk about games, music, books, writing, or why an LLM suddenly decided everybody in the room was pregnant, you're probably going to fit right in. LMAOOOO.

So please give our three new Cat Pod creators some love. Visit their spaces, check out their bots, leave them thoughtful feedback, and say hello. And if you're a creator looking for a place to grow, come see what we're building and learn more about applying for a space of your own.

As for me, I'll be over here working on Mistwood Episode 3.5, trying to convince several hundred pages of lore to cooperate with one another and occasionally remembering that I should probably eat something.

October 30th. Mistwood returns.

Thank you to everyone who's been part of this journey. For the feedback, the encouragement, the friendships, the laughs, and the opportunity to keep learning. I still have a tremendous amount I want to create, and I'm excited to see where it all goes.

But I'm even more excited that I don't have to do it alone anymore.

Welcome to Kittyland's Playground. Welcome to the clowder. Make something wonderful, make something ridiculous, and most importantly, have fun.

With love,

Kittyland πŸ’œπŸˆ
