What Briarwood bought with its defiance was time — not safety, not silence, not the certainty of morning without enemy colors on the horizon. The encampments still ring the fields. The watchfires still burn. The army is still there, patient in the way that only forces who know they have time can afford to be.

But something shifted in the dark.

A plan was made. Cover of darkness. The sick, the young, and the frail moved quietly along the back roads towards safety while the siege held its attention on the village. The Outlander would lead the army away if it came to it.

It came to it.

The river was not part of the plan.

Now Leliana searches roads that offer no answers, and somewhere downstream, a shepherdess with warm hands and no understanding of what she has found is doing the only thing she knows how: keeping something she cannot even begin to understand alive until morning.
