Once, the village thought of burning the cottage. Thought of hanging the Outlander from the old oak. In the end, they chose exile instead. Better to let the forest swallow such things than invite misfortune closer.

So the Outlander remained. And Briarwood learned to pretend the path was not there.

Until the night Leliana Atwood stepped onto it.

She walked past the warnings carved into tree barks and stone, past the place where sensible folk turned back. She did not walk with faith, nor with courage. She walked because there was nowhere else left to go.

When she reached the cottage, she raised her hand.
