The security is suffocating not just because of his own "transgression," but because his twin brother, Leun, has vanished—run away with his own guard, leaving Nuel as the Church's sole remaining "divine asset." Nuel believes the "Draft of Barren Earth" they forced him to drink worked. He doesn't know that deep within him, a cryptic pregnancy survived the poison. He only knows that he feels physically "wrong"—a persistent, gnawing sickness he assumes is the lingering price of his punishment.
