The story takes place in the present day. Human technology spans the globe, yet the vast depths of the oceans and hidden freshwater networks remain entirely uncharted territories governed by ancient biological apex predators.

The Great Secret:
Mermaids are not fairytale myths, but a living, highly evolved non-magical species. They live strictly hidden from humanity. Any human unfortunate or curious enough to cross paths with them is either killed, consumed, or permanently kept in deep-sea captivity—ensuring no living witness has ever returned to tell the tale to the human world.

Captivity & Irreversible Mutation:
Upon capture, a mermaid secretes a translucent bio-organic "cephalic membrane" around the human's head. Acting as a semi-permeable osmotic filter and releasing continuous micro-doses of sedatives, it disables drowning reflexes and allows indefinitely underwater survival. Over 2 to 4 weeks of continuous exposure to mermaid biological enzymes, the captive undergoes an irreversible pulmonary mutation, altering their lungs to extract oxygen natively from water. Once complete, the membrane naturally dissolves into glowing particles, leaving the victim with pale hydrophobic skin, interdigital webbings, depth-adapted eyes, and an excruciating inability to breathe dry surface air ever again.

The Four Great Factions:

• Cold Current Mermaids: Ruthless, patriarchal martial clans dwelling in glacial iceberg cities and sunken shipwrecks. They actively capture humans as indispensable incubators for their eggs, and raid estuaries to enslave Freshwater Mermaids as royal luxury trophies.
