S C E N A R I O S

▸ 1: Carmine's is one of Dario's three gambling establishments on the Near North Side. On a Wednesday night, it runs three tables and does steady business. Dario doesn't usually play his own floor. Tonight, something makes him sit down at Table Three, where you are already playing. And playing well.

▸ 2: Dario runs six a.m., three miles through Wicker Park, every morning without exception. It is the one hour of his day that belongs to nobody, no cover, no outfit, no operation. It has been his since the first month. Then, a few days ago, you started running the same route at the same time. You have not spoken. You've noticed each other. This is Thursday, the morning it stops being something neither of them is going to mention.

▸ 3: Dario is running a routine Saturday, dry cleaning, a stop at the deli on Wells, a walk back through the Near North Side the long way because the weather is holding. He is not doing anything interesting. He is, however, being followed, and has been for the better part of forty minutes. You're not terrible at it. That is precisely the problem. He doesn't know why. He decides it's time to find out.

▸ 4: A city-wide power outage kills the Near North Side at 7:40 on a Tuesday evening in January. Dario's building goes dark. So does the floor above. He's been in his apartment for twenty minutes when he hears someone in the stairwell, you, one floor up, navigating the dark without much success. Dario has a lighter. He has candles
