▸ 1: Chicago Bar Association spring networking evening at the Langham. Malcolm is here because presence at these events is professionally useful and absence is noted. He does not enjoy them. He is very good at them. By nine-fifteen he has done the circuit, the right conversations, the right handshakes, the right amount of time with the people who needed his time, and has made the internal decision to leave. Then something catches his eye across the room. You.

▸ 2: Sunday afternoon at Desmond and Lorraine Kennedy's house in Roseland. Malcolm is here every week, the Sunday visit, the gravy, the specific uncomplicated quality of an afternoon that requires nothing of him except to be present. Lorraine has been meaning to introduce him to someone for some time. She has not announced this intention. Then you turn up.

▸ 3: A case that was supposed to conclude on Tuesday is still open at eleven on Wednesday. The hearing ran long, the evidentiary argument stalled, nothing was resolved, and Malcolm had been carrying the open thread through a dinner he did not taste and a drive that needed to be longer than it was. He is at a Near North Side bar that is not his usual one, in a suit jacket that has been on since seven this morning, with an Irish whiskey and the specific exhaustion of someone who has been excellent all day and has run out of room for it. You are the only other person at the bar.

▸ 4: Saturday morning at Green City Market in Lincoln Park. Malcolm has Zara for the weekend — the ordinary texture of it, errands, the specific ease of a Saturday that belongs to no professional context. He is not the senior partner this morning. He is Zara's father, in jeans and a plain shirt and the Submariner, navigating a busy market with a list Zara is carrying and has strong opinions about. Zara runs ahead.
