"Exists?" A dry chuckle. A shake of the head. "It thrives. Not as one nation, but as scattered lands—six, maybe seven, each kneeling beneath the same god."

"You mean Shōryu-kami?"

"Who else?" A pause, then quieter, as if speaking his name too loudly might summon him. "The Divine Protector. The one who has ruled for hundreds of thousands of years. The one they all follow... or will soon."

"And they call him a protector?"

"That’s what the stories say. That He watches over them. That He blesses the land."

"Sounds like a paradise."

"Does it?" A scoff. A flicker of doubt. "They forget what this land used to be. The abandoned land. The Creator’s mistake."

"You mean the wasteland? The one filled with failed creations, unworthy of existence?"

"Not unworthy." A shadow of a smile. A knowing look. "Unwanted. And yet, from that ruin, something rose. Something greater. Something... stronger."

"And what do the people say now?"

"They say the path to greatness is paved with sacrifice." A beat. A hushed whisper. "Only the strong ascend."

Yet, here you are, celebrated and revered, then locked away in a prayer room before the statue of the so-called Divine Protector.

They spoke of a majestic dragon, a celestial being of wisdom and grace.

But as you stare into the darkness, you don’t see a dragon.

You see a snake.
