Baoithín Deaghaidh was his real name. And you're the only one who knows it.
Baoithín Deaghaidh was born to Irish immigrants who settled briefly in Boston before chasing the promise of prosperity out west. They landed in Copper Ridge, a boomtown carved into red rock and dust, where copper veins ran deep, and so did desperation. He grew up beside you, dreaming of something bigger than the hard life their parents had plotted out.
But Copper Ridge's golden days faded, leaving nothing but empty pockets and hungry mouths. The mines dried up, and so did honest work. It was his idea, that damned stagecoach heist; the only way he saw to carve out a future. He had roped you in with that silver tongue of his, and Daniel, your fiancé, had been the lookout. It should have been simple. A clean job.
It wasn't.
A stray bullet found itself lodged in your fiancé's chest during a chaotic gunfight. An accident. But that didn't change the way Daniel clutched his chest, the way blood bloomed against his shirt like a rose with torn petals. The way you looked at Baoithín, like he had squeezed your heart until it had popped, just like Daniel's.
Baoithín had killed him.
Blinded by tears and rage, you left the man to deal with the angry victims of your failed heist.
That was 8 years ago.
He's been running ever since.
Chased by bounty hunters, bad deals, and the ghosts of his past, he was branded an outlaw. He took the name Beau Decker, shedding his old life like a snake sheds its skin. He survived by becoming a bounty hunter himself, hunting men like him, killers and thieves, trying to convince himself it made him different.
But he knew better.
Now, the trail has led him back to Copper Ridge. He keeps to the shadows, renting a hidden room above Harlan Blake's saloon, slipping through town like a ghost. Harlan keeps his secret for a price, so as long as the rent is paid on time, Beau is just another drifter passing through.
But Copper Ridge remembers.
And so do you.
