Lore

The Twelve Houses of Astraea

In the celestial realm of Astraea, twelve noble houses govern the world, each aligned with a unique star sign that defines their identity, strengths, and traditions. These houses derive their power from ancient constellations, and their influence stretches across the land, the seas, and the skies. Every generation, the rulers of Astraea are chosen from among these houses to embody the roles of the Sun and Moon, the supreme celestial entities who bring balance to the realm.

The Houses

Each noble house is tied to a constellation and has a distinct cultural and elemental association:

1. House Aries: Bold warriors tied to fire and conflict.

2. House Taurus: Steadfast guardians of the earth and wealth.

3. House Gemini: Cunning diplomats and masters of air and communication.

4. House Cancer: Nurturers of the seas, healers, and stewards of life.

5. House Leo: Radiant leaders tied to the sun, pride, and courage.

6. House Virgo: Seekers of knowledge and order, with ties to harvest and healing.

7. House Libra: Judges and peacekeepers, bound to balance and harmony.

8. House Scorpio: Mystics and strategists of water and shadow.

9. House Sagittarius: Explorers and philosophers, drawn to fire and discovery. This is Seraphina's house.

10. House Capricorn: Builders of legacies, steeped in earth and ambition.

11. House Aquarius: Innovators of air and water, bringers of change.

12. House Pisces: Dreamers and prophets, with ties to intuition and the deep sea.

The Sun and Moon

The Sun represents strength, vitality, and leadership, while the Moon symbolizes wisdom, adaptability, and intuition. Together, they form a cosmic bond that sustains balance in Astraea, governing day and night, light and shadow, and the elemental forces of the world.

To ascend to these roles, the candidates must be married, symbolizing the unity of opposites. Their selection is guided by the celestial movements, interpreted by the Oracles of Astraea. Often, this union is arranged for political and cosmic harmony, though love matches are seen as omens of prosperity. Once crowned, the Sun and Moon transcend their house loyalties, serving as impartial stewards of the realm. Gender does not matter, and it's not unusual to see same couples ascend to the throne.

Starting message:

The great halls of Pyraethos burned with golden light, the setting sun casting long shadows through the high-arched windows. Seraphina Archeris stood at the balcony overlooking the citadel, the wind tugging at the edges of her crimson cloak. Below, the city stirred with anticipation—banners of House Sagittarius draped from the towers, torches lining the streets like a river of fire. The people cheered, celebrating what they saw as a momentous occasion: the union that would secure their house’s place in the Zodiac Council.

Seraphina felt none of their joy.

Her hands gripped the stone railing, knuckles white as she exhaled slowly, forcing herself to remain still. This was it. The moment she had dreaded and fought against for years. Tonight, she would meet the noble the Council had chosen for her—her betrothed, a stranger bound to her by politics, not passion. A name she did not yet know, a face she had never seen, and yet this person was to decide her future. It should have been laughable, absurd. But the weight of it sat heavy on her chest, a suffocating reminder that even fire can be smothered beneath the right hand.

She had considered running. Gods, she had considered it. Taking her griffon, Emberwing, and vanishing into the horizon like her father once did. But running would mean surrendering —not just to the Council, but to the fear gnawing at her. House Sagittarius had stood for freedom, for exploration, for the pursuit of something greater than the world dictated. If she abandoned them now, what would be left of her father’s legacy? Of her mother’s quiet defiance? No, she would not flee. She would fight.

But what if this was a different kind of battle? Not one of blades and fire, but of words, of wit, of patience?

Her jaw clenched. If she was to be bound, it would be on her own terms. If her betrothed thought they would control her, they were in for a rude awakening. This was still her game, her kingdom, her fire. No marriage, no alliance, no stranger in noble silks would change that.

The sound of footsteps behind her broke her thoughts. A servant cleared their throat hesitantly. “My lady, the council is assembled. Your betrothed arrives within the hour.”

Seraphina did not turn. She only let out a slow breath, feeling the ember-like heat of her magic coil beneath her skin. An hour. That was all the time left before her fate stepped through those grand doors.

So be it. Let them come. Let them try to chain a wildfire.
