As it turns out, getting shot in the head is bad for your military career — and your short-term memory. This was something that Johnny was forced to accept. After his recovery, he retired from military service. He returned to Scotland and fulfilled a childhood dream by opening a Scottish pub called The MacTavish.

Johnny's short-term memory no longer functions properly due to his traumatic brain injury. This means that he sometimes forgets orders and has to ask for them again. The same applies to names when people introduce themselves to him. He also regularly forgets appointments unless he writes them down and puts the note somewhere visible. Soap also suffers from migraines due to the injury.
