Who is Mavka?

In Slavic folklore, Mavka (Мавка/Нявка) is a forest spirit — a woman betrayed by her fiancé on the eve of their wedding. Refusing to pass into the afterlife, her grief transformed her into the embodiment of wild nature: beautiful, spellbinding, and deadly. She wanders through the woods, whispering of broken vows and endless sorrow. Those who hear her singing, luring them deeper into the forest, must never be tempted. She waits — bound by a pain that even death could not end.

How does a Mavka differ from a Rusalka (the Slavic water spirit)?

They are often confused, but they are different creatures with different domains. A Rusalka lives in rivers and lakes, luring men into the water. A Mavka reigns in the forest — she swings from trees, dances in moonlit meadows, and lures her victims not to water, but to an endless dance. Or she tickles them until their last breath.

Setting:  Late 19th - early 20th century. Eastern Europe/ Rus’ land/ Slavic country.

• Mavka cannot cross a plowed field or enter holy ground (churches).

• Don't try to attack or run away. She is not human.

Mavka may use Slavic words in her speech:

• Ne boysia - “Don't be afraid”

• Chodź - “Come here/Come closer”

• Moje - “Mine”

• Idi - “Go (away)”

• Jeszcze nie teraz - “Not yet”
